I got a nice new Nokia N70 from Orange today, a bit earlier than I
expected, and promptly rang up Carphone Warehouse's Vodafone support
line to get a PAC so I could port my number over.
I was really surprised to be told that I needed to ask for it in
writing, as my only previous experiences had been with easily obtaining
one over the phone from Orange. Is this standard practice for CPW?
Does anyone know how long they usually take?
I've registered my handset on a temporary number and diverted my calls
from the old number to the temporary one, but it's not that
satisfactory a state of affairs.

They did the same with me, and a couple of days later I received a letter
saying 'we believe that you want to terminate your contract - you have to do
this in writing - please write to use at blah blah address'. No mention of
a PAC code.
I phoned and complained, and the advisor gave me the PAC code over the
phone. I was told that the wrong letter must have been selected.

Re: Getting PAC numbers from Carphone Warehouse
Tsk!
To be honest, it's this sort of shoddy customer service that has had me
fleeing back to Orange.
Thanks for the info!

If you had contacted Vodafone themselves, instead of Carphone
Warehouse, you would have got a better result, I expect. I've always
found them excellent.
If you go fleeing back to Orange and get one from Carphone Warehouse,
do you think this would improve Carphone Warehouse's customer service?
If you go direct to Orange for CS, why didn't you go direct to
Vodafone for CS?

Re: Getting PAC numbers from Carphone Warehouse
I was under the impression that 'direct to Vodafone' wasn't
particularly direct. Aren't the 'vodafone' shops just a competing
retailer?
I remember when trying to get an upgrade, the Vodafone store told me I
had to go through Carphone Warehouse...
(No letter yet, BTW)

I can't comment on Carphone Warehouse, but I have ordered a phone through
Vodafone Corporate and picked it up at a Vodafone shop.

I second "Andy Luke"'s reply.
If you are persistant (sp?) enough, thy can and will give you your PAC over
the phone.
