I was given a vodafone pay-as-you-go simply vs3 as a Christmas present.
I was unimpressed that it arrived with a charger interface incompatible
with nokia's, that it had no car charger, and that a USB cable to backup
data is an optional extra. I also failed to set up call barring. (I know
enough to recognise that a barring password must be set before barring
is set.)
To set a barring password:
Home/Settings/Privacy/Security/Call Barring Passw./Select
Change Password/Select
"Enter Old Password:"
0000 will cause "OK" be enabled
"Enter New Password:" is followed by 4 digits and down arrow puts you at
"Retype Password:". 4 digits enables the OK button. It took me a while
to find the need for down arrow. I think it is a software bug.
With PAYG, "Invalid request" is returned.
Assuming you can enable the password, Call Barring allows the following
separate controls: All Incoming Calls; All Outgoing Calls; Outgoing
Int'l Calls; Outgoing if abroad; Incoming if abroad; Check Status; and
Cancel All.
Do any providers support PAYG and barring?
I am particularly interested in Call Barring. My daughter had to pay
about 100 pounds used in the hour between her contract 'phone being
stolen and her stopping further damage.
I was quoted 25.00UKP for a USB cable and a 3 week delivery was
mentioned. Can one buy better?

Can you not set a PIN, which you have to enter every time you switch the phone
on, and a PIN protected screen saver which kicks in after, say, 2 mins?
In any case with PAYG you can normally only lose the credit on the phone (unless
you've got auto top-up's by DD), so the potential losses are much smaller if you
keep your credit low.

Same with Call Divert, most PAYG block direct *# and menu based access,
instead restricting it by shortcodes so that Voicemail is still
configurable. A real pain, but I think it was done to prevent some kind of
abuse.

Why did you expect it to be compatible with Nokia? Isn't the VS3 made
by Sagem?

Call barring will not help you here.

I use a vodafone pay as you go phone and can use call barring. The default
barring code / password is 1919 though not 0000 or 1234.

Sadly, it has no such feature.

I suppose I should relax. After all, my car is no more secure.

Video players are reasonably universal. OTOH, Dell now uses proprietary
power supply leads. This seems anti-competitive to me. It allows the
absurdity of a 25UKP USB cable.

I suspect you are lucky. I tried 1919 without success. I emailed
vodafone. If their response is useful, I will post it here.
