I got scammed with a sprint blackberry 8530

I was dumb enough to purchase this phone off of someone on craigslist and now i can't seem to get it activated because sprint says the phone is tied to an account with a past due balance, is there anything i can do

You've suffered an expensive lesson.

Next time, get the ESN/MEID of the device before you buy (upstanding sellers have no problem providing this to prospective customers) and call Sprint with it and ask them if it's a "clean ESN" (IOW, if it's able to be put on the Sprint network).

This goes for Verizon, too.
