I have been eagerly awaiting the next big thing from Nokia and it’s finally here. The Nokia Lumia 1020 is a cell phone that just blew my mind away. But that is a topic for a different post. Here we are going to look at one cell phone which seems to have been overlooked by the cell phone community, the Blackberry Z10. And what better way to see how the Blackberry Z10 performs than comparing it with one of the leading smart phones out there today, the Samsung Galaxy S4. So let’s not waste any more time and get straight into it.

Size and weight

When it comes to size the Blackberry Z10 is significantly smaller at 130 x 65.6 x 9 mm as compared to 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.90 mm of the Samsung Galaxy S4. But the Galaxy S4 is thinner than the Z10. And in terms of weight the Blackberry Z10 is just 8 g heavier than the Galaxy S4 at 138 g. A pretty decent job by Blackberry considering this is their first real smart phone. But is it good enough to compete with the big boys? It would be unfair to say no.

Let’s call this one a draw.

Display

In terms of the display size and quality, Blackberry has a long way to go before it can really compete. The Z10 comes with a 4.2” capacitive touch screen which at best offers a mediocre experience. This is nothing compared to the amazing 5.0” Super AMOLED screen which is one of the best screens in the market. In terms of pixel density as well, the Z10 is far behind at 356 ppi as compared to the 441 ppi of the Galaxy S4.

No questions about who gets this point. Samsung takes it hook, line and sinker.

Memory & Storage

Now while the Galaxy S4 is available in 3 variants, namely 16, 32 and 64 GB the Z10 is only available in a 16 GB variant. But, as far as expandable memory is concerned, both cell phones are exactly the same, offering up to 64 GB for expansion. In terms of RAM as well, both cell phones have 2 GB which means that they both run quite fast.

Guess there’s nothing separating these two phones in this point either.

Camera

This is a point that the Galaxy S4 has been ruling for a few months now and it doesn’t look like it’s going to change in this comparison. While Blackberry has done quite well with an 8 MP camera on the back and 1080p HD recording, the camera doesn’t offer quite as much quality as the 13 MP camera on the Galaxy S4. Even in terms of features, the Galaxy S4 has quite a few while the Z10 comes with only auto focus, digital image stabilization and touch to focus. Some very important features, but when that’s all your camera offers, you can’t hope for too much in this point. Both phone have a 2 MP front camera but the Galaxy S4 provides superior recording quality at 1080p HD as compared to 720p HD on the Z10.

No surprises here, the Galaxy S4 wins once again.

OS & Performance

The Galaxy S4 runs on the latest Android operating system 4.2.2 (JellyBean) while the Z10 runs on Blackberry’s latest operating system Blackberry (10). I don’t think many people are aware that Blackberry too has an app store called “Blackberry World”. They have a wide range of apps available and quite a few decent apps as well. While it might not offer as much choice as the Google Play Store, but it definitely is a decent enough start. So what can you look forward to in Blackberry (10)? Not much really. There is a lot more work required before the Blackberry OS starts looking anything like the big three (Nokia, Samsung and Apple). Even in terms of performance, the Z10 seems a little dated with a 1500 MHz Dual Core processor.

The point goes to Samsung.

Battery

I was hoping that the battery would help the Z10 pick up at least 1 point. The phone has a 1,800 mAh battery which allows for a standby time of 13 days. Considering the fact that the Galaxy S4 has a 2,600 mAh battery and offers a standby time of just an extra couple of days I can’t really say that Blackberry is a letdown. But still, I’m sure they could have put in a bigger battery.

Anyway, facts are facts, the numbers show another point for Samsung.

Price

You can pick up a Blackberry Z10 for around $ 620 in the market while the Galaxy S4 is priced around $ 690. Yes, the Z10 is $ 70 cheaper but with a four point lead, I’m sure Samsung has pretty much proved that you get an extra $ 70 worth of product when you go with the Galaxy S4.

I won’t be awarding this point to either.

Conclusion

So with the score at 4 to 0, you don’t need to be a genius to figure out which smart phone is better. And the sad part about the Blackberry Z10 is that it was the first phone that Blackberry had released keeping the general public in mind. It didn’t really work out for them and the lack of a their trademark keypad means that even die-hard blackberry supporters will have trouble accepting this cell phone. What can I say, this didn’t really work out too well for Blackberry. Better luck next time, eh?
