CAN I SPEED DIAL FROM KEYBOARD -BlackBerry KEY2

Help?! Assigning the speed dials 2-thru-9 was the easy part. But then I THOUGHT? that pressing an assigned key would connect me...as pressing 1 does to email. Does the keyboard on the KEY2 NOT do that for the assigned keys? Cause I realllly don't want another widget on the desktop. I hoped keeping QWERTY meant I could just press a key without scrolling and make the connection. ANd no amount of googling and juggling search words is giving me anything but how to ASSIGN the keys so I'm feeling as if the entire BlackBerry world knows how to then USE the assigned #s except MEEEEE (whaaaaa! Sobbbbbb!)
