Rogers is currently offering two cheapie phones.. the Samsung X426 or the Motorola V220.

Anyone have any experience with either.. ie, can you recommend one over the other, and why?

I have heard numerous complaints about the mic being too sensitive on the X426

"Better" is very subjective. It depends what you want.

Overall build quality is much better on the X426

The screen is much better on the X426

Sound quality is much better on the X426

Overall, in general, I would reccomend the X426

If it was for me, without a doubt, I would get the V220.
Because, I "need" Camera & MMS.

But, anyways forget them both. Get the Nokia 3220. It is the same price range, and beats them both in most areas.

I'm with chillin run from both. If those were the only two phones availalble I'd have to say I'd go with X426 with reluctance.

    Splurge on a V300 or V551 u'll be glad u did.

    Thanks for the info.

I went with the X426. It was for my wife, and she just wanted a basic phone that works reliably. No need for camera, text, or enhanced messaging, or any of the organizer stuff. Just wanted a basic flip phone that is light, compact, and works.

I had read a lot of mixed reviews on the 426.. with satisfaction being about 50/50. Most of the complaints, however, seemed with the earlier versions of the phone with the 1.5 version firmware. This one has 1.7.

    So far so good.

The really annoying thing is that the supplied 40 ring tones are suitable for a 13 year old.. not an adult business person. I was assured that I could download ringtones, but this is turning out to be a bit of a nightmare. First of all, the ring tones on the Rogers site are all basically the same.. silly long melodies that appeal to a teenager. THERE ARE NO STANDARD BUSINESS TONES! arrgh!

And, I now learn that the only way I can download a tone, is via the internet connection on the phone, which Rogers charges 5 cents a kilobyte (that is in addition to the cost of the ringtone). There is no way to transfer a tone from your PC via a cable or other connection.

If anyone can point me to a site that has info on ring tones, how to download them, or maybe even create my own from MP3 files or MIDI files and convert them to MMF files, and somehow upload them to my phone, I would greatly appreciate it. I have found a few ring tones online, but they go on and on for 30 seconds or so.. I need to be able to edit them to cut them down to a few seconds and convert them to MMF and upload to my phone. Thanks!

You CAN download tones to ur phone via datacable to the x426, i bought my datacable off ebay for $20 and came with a leather case and a few other things. After u get the cable, just follow the installation instructions.
Then, all you have to do is go onto the samsung website, download easy gprs and you can transfer the tones. Check out the ringing tones section of this forum to find out how to do the tone editing u need, right now i use psmplay to cut my tones and convert em to mmf.

I have an X426 and im pretty happy. The quality of the V220 camera is pretty poor, a lot of my friends have it and dont really like it. Id go with the X426 if u dont care about a camera.

    Thanks

Thanks to all for the replies.

My wife has has the x426 for about a month now and is quite happy with it. It has v1.7 firmware, and from what I can gather, most of the problems were with phones with pervious versions of firmware. ( check your firmware by entering *#9999# )

Yesterday, I decided to upgrade mine as well to the x426, and now I am in the tedious process of manually entering all my phone numbers from my old Nokia! What a waste of time! Fortunately, this new phone has a SIM card to store all the numbers, so the next time I can simply transfer the SIM card to the new phone.

    Couple of things I found..

    1. It had been reported that there is no way to program a PAUSE in the dial string. This is a 'must' for anyone wishing to punch in a string of tones for certain services, such as accessing an answering service. I called Samsung, and found that this is indeed supported, albeit, somewhat a secret. In fact, this is not mentioned in the user manual at all. You just hold down the asterisk key for a few seconds until it changes to a 'P' on the screen. Each pause programmed will pause for about a second. For example, programming 555-666-7777PPP33333# will dial the the number, pause about 3 seconds to allow the service to answer, then automatically send the rest of the string to access the mailbox.

    2. Now the only other thing I wish it could do is toggle long distance numbers. In my area, it is mandatory to always dial the area code, so every number in my phone book is a 10 digit number. However, depending where I am at the time, sometimes a call is 'local' and sometimes it is 'long distance'. So, in those cases where I am in the long distance area, I have to look up the number, memorize it, then manually enter it prefixing it with a '1' to access long distance. It would be real handy if there was a LD button, that would automatically insert a '1' before the number in my phone book for those cases where the number is actually long distance.

ya the samsung is def better. motorola has more features but the overall quality of the phone is crap. the camera is better on the samsung, and my friend works at a rogers store, where he's only received a handfull of samsungs for repair, while the v220 has come back dozens of times.

I would say the Samsun X426.
Just like the user above me said, I've seen both models and the quality of the samsung is much higher.
    Quality > Quantity of features.

As noted in my previous post, I am quite happy with the 426.. other than the long distance thing I mentioned. One other thing I noticed is that it is very 'noisy' electronically.. by that I mean, it generates a lot of static noise in nearby electronic equipment. For example, if it is beside my computer speakers, it generates a lot of static noise in them. Definitely not a phone to use in sensitive areas like a hospital.

Since then, I have been trying to download ringtones, and find this rather a pain. Some sites work fine while others do not.

I did find a good program, Mobile Music Polyphonic, that can convert mp3 and wav files to mmf (polyphonic), but am still looking for a way to download them to my phone. Some people have mentioned getting a Data kit (cable and software: Easygps) and downloading them myself from my PC; I am still investigating this.

I found another program, Ringtone Converter, that really did not do the conversions I wanted (only converted midi to mmf, but did not do mp3 to mmf), but it did have a built in WAP server. A WAP server allows you to use your PC as a server and it assigns an IP address. You then use the browser on your phone to access this server and download the ringtone. Unfortunately, it did not work on my system, and after contacting support, they offered to refund my purchase.. which I thought was nice of them. However, it would have been nice to use if it worked!
