    Hi guys,

Since Rogers puchased Fido and Fido now uses Rogers coverage, with Fido pricing so much cheaper, why would anyone choose Rogers over Fido? Just curious because I've been with Fido for 4 months and my cell phone says Rogers Network and my bills are 1/2 price of a co-worker who uses Rogers. We are also on data plans, I pay $50 unlimited data and he pays $100 for 100MB data using the same towers. Plus my voice packages blow his away as far as pricing goes too. Anyone care to comment???

Hmm...Fido has a $20 plan too which is similar to Rogers, but Fido is per second billing which make a big difference...also, is there any difference with their data transfers? How can Rogers now justify $100 for 100MB data transfer pricing??? especially if Fido has a $50 unlimited???

Check the following link about the Expanded Network option:

    http://www.fido.ca/portal/promos/per...romotion.shtml

Be careful when using Rogers' network unless you have enabled the Expanded Network option which cost extra $5 per month. Without the Expanded Network option and if you use Rogers network, it is like using roaming which I believe is around 20 cents per minute. Please call Fido to make sure.

Anyway, if your plan is like more than $5 cheaper than Rogers' plan, it is still better to use Fido plan + Expanded Network option.

Just a little off topic - about Fido's roaming charge in US. It used to be very cheap, like 20 cents US per minute before taken over by Rogers. I was informed recently that it will be raised to C$0.5 per minute now. Although it is still cheaper than Rogers ($0.95 per minute), the increase is double. Hence it is best to have an unlocked phone and if you have to travel a lot to US, you better get a pay as you go service in US. Forget about roaming as it is just like stealing money from your pocket.

Your right, it's now officially raised to 50 cents a minutes!!! Must have been changed because of the Rogers takeover. Maybe Rogers will not make these Fido plans too attractive anymore.... so people end up going to Rogers directly, but in the end I guess it's the same.....

Fido was purchased by Rogers. They are going to try to get as many people as they can to join Fido THEN switch over to use Rogers. Their target is to "lock" you into a contract. There is no real reason to be with Fido or Rogers unless you want to travel with your phone internationally. Bell is going to soon be offering a "gsm" network of sorts and then thats it-game over for rogers. They are just hoping to get people into 3 year contracts, do the switch, deal with customers complaining, but hope they will just forget about it since they will be in contracts anyway.

If I can get a cheaper plan with Fido, billed by the second, use any phone I want, use my phone anywhere in the world where I travel, and switch between phones with my sim card, and get better phones, why would I choose Bell or Telus???? What advantages do I have with going with these guys? Can you name one? Coverage may be better in some places, very few, other than that I cannot name one reason why I would choose them. I was with Telus Mobility for over 11 years and they would not even price match with anything from Fido so I switched and am very happy about it. I'm saving over $150/month as I am a heavy user with a data plan(only cost me $50/month unlimited). Anyone else care to comment????

The beauty of SIM card may be one of the reason why more and more people use GSM. I like the old days when Fido and Rogers are competitors. After the merger, Rogers has more users and theoretically, their running cost is lower. However, instead of Rogers lowering their price to match with that of Fido, they raised the price of Fido to make Rogers' plan not as ugly as before. I will certainly welcome Bell to provide GSM service later if that is true. We need competition.

The point of my email was not to bash Rogers but to fill you in. If you use a treo, it's true FIDO has a better package for that HOWEVER if you had bothered to read the rest of my thread, or the one under yours you would have seen that it's a matter of time before the gravy train ends for FIDO users. It's sad and unfair but I swear this to be true. Rogers doesn't offer anything like the FIDO data plan, they make money off of people using their data, even though it costs them next to nothing to supply it.

There are a copple reasons you would go with Rogers rather than fido

    1. You have a corperate plan
    2. You live outside the fido local calling zone

they're only robbers if you're not informed. you're informed ahead of time on their service and rates before you sign up with them.

Most people just choose based on the phones being offered.

Re: Why choose Rogers over Fido???

I can think of many reasons:

    Better phones

    Much better CS

    24/7 CS

Always first with the newest features

99% of people are elligible for Employee/student pricing that is better that what anyone else offers.

Bundles (save up to 15% off of your cell bill, your home phone bill, your internet bill, and your cable bill)

    just to name a few...

Re: Why choose Rogers over Fido???

    ummm I have basic coverage...
was wondering, how do I know I am on the Expanded rogers network.
    Does my phone tell me??
if not, then doesnt this breach some rule for them to charge me without me knowing..?? ESPECIALLY if I am locally in the City of Toronto...
ps: I am fido, and not well educated on the expanded coverage or where it is offered/covered...
    tx.

what is this GSM network from bell that you're speaking of? bell is facing a big dilemma considering the overhead required to make the switch to GSM. this problem could bury bell.

please explain what you are talking about. and please explain how this will be game over for rogers.

also, there are many more advantages to using a rogers phone than simply for international travel. rogers has a better selection of handsets, has competitive rates, has highly regarded customer service, and works on the clearest network <largest integrated voice/data network in canada>.

these are real advantages that you can take to the bank.
