are you with rogers? if so then yes you will pay the $300 and the $200 ecf(early cancellation fee). People make a huge mistake when they take their canadian cell phone to the states, buy a calling card and think that they're good. I'm not sure where the logic is with this with you people!! You are taking your phone to another country..HELLO!! calling card or not you are not with rogers or whoever. you are with whatever american provider is displaying on your screen, and they have agreements with some canadian cell providers saying 'ok, we'll give your customers service, but we are going to charge them what we feel like'. call and find out next time

unfortunately that's not possible unless your handset is unlocked. all handsets come locked to the carrier you sign up with when you buy the service. you can't a sim card for another carrier in the handset unless you get it unlocked. good luck doing that with rogers

There are independant retailers that will unlock your phone for around 20-25$. Although discussion on unlocking your phones in prohibited on this forum so I can not say anymore. Just look around.

There are also unlocking sites that will remotely unlock your hansets, though at this point it's too late, you will have to pay your last bill of $300 plus the ETF.

BTW, discussions of unlocking phones is not prohibited, unless it's done illegaly, CPF simply does not have unlocking codes for unlocking phones so we ask members to search themselves for an unlocking site and/or independent cell phone retailers.

It is Very simple to unlock your phone. In many cases it is very easy to do it yourself, in all other cases it should never cost more than $25.

When traveling to another country the cheapest solution is always to buy a local prepaid SIM (and them possibly using a calling card as the OP did).

Well..."very simple" is quite subjective Chillin'. A person not solidly comfortable with PCs & a touch of programming will find it quite overwhelming to engage in any activities with such programs as Flash Backup 1.6
PDS Editor, if you're referring to this thread in particular.
Lastly, if you're lucky and you have somebody like Dr. Dave (in Ottawa), he'll do it for $15. I've even seen people advertise doing it for $5!!! (Motorolas).

Geez...do you think., JUST possibly that he paid $300 because he called A LOT MORE, than you did? .

ONE PRICE. The only difference between two users who used the exact same useage is if one was on a 'plan' and one wasn't. and STILL the difference wouldn't be 99% different (using your comparitive rate $300 vs $3 ).

He said Good luck getting your Rogers phone unlocked. I was saying it is Very easy to get a Rogers phone unlocked. Not necessarily to do it yourself. Although especially with Nokias anyone can do it.

Not always, we live in Toronto and took the cell phone to FLorida and called to Europe from there. There were no big fees.

This is really interesting. Where can you get a cingular or similar prepaid sim card? I had the same problem with Telus when I had it. Went to San Fran for 2 weeks, my bill was $450. Everyone told me to get a $40 prepaid Virgin mobile phone but I didn't listen of course. Can you actually get a cingular prepaid sim without buying a phone? My blackberry is unlocked as well.

Re: I Want Out!!! Pls Help

You can purchase a prepaid SIM card in the USA for use in any unlocked GSM phone. Telus however is not GSM and therefore doed not use or accept SIM cards. You will have to buy a phone to go with your SIM card down there. Fortunately they are cheap.
