Samsung's Galaxy Nexus is the first smartphone to feature Android Ice Cream Sandwich and as a result, the first smartphone to feature Google's Face Unlock feature. What this means for you is that the software allows you to unlock your phone just by showing the camera your face. This can prove to be very beneficial for those times when you shouldn't be typing on your phone or just want to avoid the fuss of typing out a PIN or pattern.

In order to enable the Face Unlock feature on your Samsung Galaxy Nexus, proceed with the following instructions:

  • Navigate to the Home screen and from here, select Settings (Home > Settings).
  • Once in the Settings menu, select the Security option listed (Settings > Security).
  • Now that you are in the Security section, you should see an option titled Face Unlock. Proceed to choose this from the menu (Security > Face Unlock).
  • Once you have selected this feature, you will need to provide an appropriate photo for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus to compare with your face each time you use the feature. In order to get the best results, look into the camera and line up your face in the visible area on the screen.
  • The software behind this technology is very new and therefore can be glitchy. It is important to take a picture of a “standard face”, without smiling or gesturing in any other way. As a back-up means of protection (or rather, protection against the protection), it is advised that you enter a PIN number as well in the event you cannot unlock the phone with your face for some reason.
  • Once you have completed these steps, you will be prompted to test the feature by looking into the Galaxy Nexus' front camera to unlock it. If it works, congratulations! If you are having difficulties, try retaking the photo and always make sure to remember your auxiliary PIN.
