Good morning all. I've had my Galaxy S3 for a few months now, and have always been able to connect to my PC via USB. A few days ago, it suddenly stopped working. I've spent hours banging my head on this. I spent some time with Samsung support, and the woman just read off a script until I lost my mind. So I'm hoping some real human intervention will help.

Symptoms: when I plug the phone in via USB, the phone beeps, I get a lightning bolt on my battery, but that's it. There are no USB options in the pull-down status bar, and the PC does not recognize that a device has been plugged in.

System: Windows 7 x64 with the latest drivers and Kies software from Samsung.

    What I've tried:
    • My wife has an identical Galaxy S3--I plugged her S3 into the same cable, and it was recognized immediately. So I know the PC and cable are both working correctly.
    • Uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers several times anyway -- alone AND with the Kies software.
    • Tried every USB port on the box
    • Factory data reset--both from the setup menu, and the diagnostic bootup menu
    • USB debugging mode, both on and off.
    • Changing the UART and USB settings in the *#7284# PhoneUtil. After my last factory reset, it's set to PDA/MTP+ADB.

So I'm not sure where to go next. I'm open to any suggestions.

    Thanks!

    -Joe

Hrm, what happens when you plug it into another USB port?

Actually, what happens when you take out the sd card and turn off USB debugging mode?

    The exact same thing.

I don't have an SD card inserted. USB debugging mode makes no change, on or off.

odd. Have you tried uninstalling both the samsung drivers and kies, and only reinstalling the drivers?

Yes. And as I said in my OP, if I plug in my wife's S3, it works fine. So I know the PC, the cables, the USB port and the drivers are all working correctly.

Oh right, sorry I missed that.

It's odd that you're not getting any options for USB in the notifications pull down. You should get this screen:

I wonder if one or a couple of the pins in the plug are dirty/broken.

FYI, the driver that auto installs when I plug in my phone (also win 7 64) is under "Portable Devices" > SCH-I535 - version 6.1.7600.16385

I'm sorry, I don't understand what this means. Can you elaborate a little?

I also tried two different PCs, one without any drivers and one with the Samsung drivers. My wife's phone worked on both, my phone worked on neither.
