The Samsung Galaxy S4 has been ruling the market ever since its release and doesn’t seem like that is going to be changing anytime soon. But with all the new smartphones in the market today, phones like the Samsung Galaxy Note II are not really considered smartphones anymore. That being said, this post is going to be comparing Samsung’s Galaxy Mega 5.8 with the current leader of the industry, the Samsung Galaxy S4. But with the little I have seen of the Galaxy Mega 5.8 so far, the phone doesn’t really seem like it is going to turn many heads.

1. Size and weight - In terms of size and weight the Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 can be considered as the Samsung Galaxy S4’s father. It uses older technology and is a lot bigger. The Galaxy S4 measures 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm while the Galaxy Mega 5.8 measures 162.6 x 82.4 x 9 mm. Clearly, the idea was to make the Mega 5.8 a “phablet”. In terms of weight, I would like to appreciate the effort put in by Samsung, as the Galaxy Mega 5.8 weighs just 182 g, as much as the Nokia Lumia 920 which is significantly smaller and the Galaxy S4 weighs in at an amazing 130 g. It would be unfair to say that the Galaxy S4 is more portable when clearly Samsung was aiming for a larger screen with the Galaxy Mega 5.8.

2. Display - With all the advanced features being offered in the market today it was really a disappointment that Samsung went for a TFT screen for the Galaxy Mega 5.8.It is pretty big at 5.8 inches and this means that the Galaxy Mega 5.8 can really come in handy when it comes to using Excel spreadsheets or working on projects and can even be carried around easily. There are two other disappointing factors here; the first is the 190 ppi which reads for a really sorry figure in front of the 441 ppi of the Galaxy S4. And the other is the screen resolution which is just 960 x 540 in the Galaxy Mega 5.8 compared to the 1,920 x 1,080 screen resolution of the Galaxy S4.

3. Memory & Storage - Both being Samsung phones there really isn’t much of a difference in this category. The Galaxy S4 has 2 GB of RAM while the Galaxy Mega 5.8 offers 1.5 GB of RAM. Now many may not think of this as anything but numbers and I hope that the lower RAM doesn’t affect the functioning of the phone in any way. The Galaxy S4 comes in a 16 GB model while the Galaxy Mega 5.8 comes in an 8 GB model. Both phones support expansion up to 64 GB through a microSD card slot.

4. Camera - The 13 MP camera on the Galaxy S4 has been on top ever since it released and the 8 MP camera on the Galaxy Mega 5.8 isn’t going to be able to change anything. Quite honestly, I think Samsung just added the 8 MP camera to the Galaxy Mega 5.8 because they can and for no other reason whatsoever.

5. OS & Performance - The Samsung Galaxy S4 was the first phone to release with the latest Android OS, 4.2.2. Jellybean. And the Galaxy Mega 5.8 is most probably going to be the first phablet to release with Android 4.2.2. Jellybean. When both phones are running on the same operating system, there is very little you can compare among them. Although we are eagerly awaiting the release of the Galaxy Mega 5.8 to check out the new Nature UX user interface.

6. Battery - Both these phones are fitted with the exact same 2,600 mAh battery. But considering that the Galaxy Mega 5.8 has a bigger screen it might not provide the same battery life you get with the Galaxy S4. Still, Samsung phones have always had a good battery life and there is no reason for that to change now.

7. Price - The Galaxy S4 can be purchased out of contract for $ 698.50. That is a little steep for a smartphone, but considering it is the best in the market, most people wouldn’t mind picking it up under contract even if they had to change their network operators. There has not yet been any official statement on the pricing of the Galaxy Mega 5.8 but my guess is it will cost somewhere around $ 350 - $ 400.

Conclusion

When concluding the comparison between both these phones the first thing that any one will be able to see is that the phones have not really been designed to compete with each other. While the Galaxy S4 has a lot more bundled into its small little frame, the Galaxy Mega 5.8 has been made for an entire different purpose. And both phones do their job pretty well. I think it would only be fair to say that the Galaxy S4 is the better phone but the Galaxy Mega 5.8 would be a lot better off being compared with another phablet instead of a smartphone.
