While the official Android 4.4 KitKat update continues to roll-out on multiple smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy S3 is most likely going to receive the KitKat treatment at a later date. Fortunately, those of you who own a SGS3 can still enjoy Android 4.4 KitKat by applying custom ROMs.

OmniROM is a project that has been created by developers like Chainfire, Dees_troy and Xplodwild, as well as other contributors. Team OmniROM has now created the first Nightly build based on the Android 4.4 AOSP, for the Samsung Galaxy S3. This ROM contains KitKat features, as well as other new ones, including non-obtrusive call notification windows, milti-window, milti-workspace modes, flipable quick settings and tons of other UI improvements.

Before proceeding, please read the bullet points below.

    IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ:

    • This OmniROM Nightly KitKat installation guide is meant only for the Samsung Galaxy S3 build number I9300. DO NOT use this guide in an attempt to apply the ROM on other devices, or other Galaxy S3 variants. (To find out your SGS3's build, go to "Settings" > "About device"
    • This is a "nightly" build, meaning that new updates will be released very shortly
    • In order to apply this ROM, you need to have a rooted Galaxy S3 running the latest ClockWorkMod Recovery image
    • It is recommended that you create backups, as this procedure will require factory reset
    • Once you already run on Android 4.4 OmniROM, you will NOT need to factory reset your device in order to apply an OmniROM update
    • To backup data from your application, you can use the "Helium" app from the Play Store
    • To backup SMS, you can use the "SMS Backup & Restore" app
    • To backup APN Internet settings, you can use the "APN Backup & Restore" application
    • You can backup your contacts by syncing them with your Gmail account
    • Before proceeding, make sure that USB Debugging is enabled in the "Developer Options" menu. To make the "Developer Options" menu visible, go to "Settings" > "About device" and tap the "Build number" field until you get the "Developer mode has been enabled" message on the screen. Then, go back to "Settings" > "Developer options" and enable "USB Debugging"
    • Make sure that your smartphone has at least 60-70% battery life before proceeding
    • This is an advanced guide. Proceed with caution and don't skip any steps. If you brick / damage your phone, you cannot hold the developers or anyone else responsible

    Booting in CWM Recovery Mode:

IMPORTANT: Don't follow these steps right now. This is a short tutorial that will show you how to boot the Galaxy S3 I9300 in CWM recovery mode, but you do not need to do this right now. Refer to this guide when you will be directed to do so.

    1. Shut down your smartphone
    2. Press the "Volume up", "Home" and "Power" buttons at the same time
    3. When the recovery mode screen appears, release the buttons

Installing the OmniROM Android 4.4 Nightly Custom ROM on the Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300:

    1. Download the necessary OmniROM KitKat zip by visiting this link. (Sort by "Last modified" and download the latest build)
    2. OmniROM does not include Google apps, so you will need to download the Gapps zip by visiting this link
    3. Don't unzip these files. After you've downloaded them, connect your smartphone to your computer and copy the zip files to your phone's memory
    4. Power off your Galaxy S3 I9300 and disconnect it from your computer
    5. Reboot in CWM recovery mode (refer to the guide above)
    6. Now, you will need to create a NANDROID backup for your current ROM, in case you wish to rollback to it should you not enjoy OmniROM, or if something goes wrong. Don't skip this step.
      • To create a NANDROID backup, select "Backup and restore" and save the file to your device
    7. You will need to Factory Reset the smartphone. Select "wipe data / factory reset" and confirm. (NOTE: Skip this step if you are already running Android 4.4 OmniROM and you wish to update to a newer build)
    8. Flash the OmniROM Android 4.4 zip. To do so, select "Install from sdcard" > "choose zip from sdcard". Don't press any buttons until the installation is complete
    9. Now, you need to flash the Google apps zip. Select "install from sdcard" > "choose zip from sdcard" again, but this time, browse and select the Google apps zip
    10. Once both the OmniROM and the Gapps zips have been installed, return to the "Recovery" screen
    11. Select "Reboot system now". This first reboot might take several minutes, so don't panic, be patient and don't press any buttons
    12. Your device should now run OmniROM Android 4.4 custom ROM. Add your Google Account and restore your SMS, contacts and APN settings if necessary

NOTE: if the first reboot takes too long, or assuming that your device enters a boot loop, then the installation was not successful. Repeat the tutorial and don't skip any steps.

NOTE: In case you wish to return to your previous OS, use the NANDROID backup to restore it.
