Backing Up Applications:

  1. While viewing the home screen tap "Apps"
  2. Go to "Settings"
  3. Swipe to "User and Backup" and tap "Backup and reset"
  4. You need to be logged in to a Google account before you can back up your apps. If necessary, tap "Backup account" > "Add account" and follow the on-screen instructions to create or add a Google account
  5. If necessary, mark the "Backup my data" and "Backup account" check boxes

Contact Backup

Backing Up Contacts using a Samsung or Google Account:

  1. From the home screen, tap "Contacts"
  2. Tap "Settings" > "merge accounts"
  3. Select a "Google" or "Samsung" account
  4. Tap "OK" to merge device contacts with the ones stored on your Google or Samsung account

Backing Up Contacts on the SD Card:

  1. Tap "Apps" while on the home screen
  2. Tap "Settings" and swipe to "Applications"
  3. Tap "Contacts" and if necessary, tap "Contacts to display" > "All contacts"
  4. Press "Import / Export" > "Export to SD card"
  5. Review the file name for future use and tap "OK" to confirm the export

Media File Backup

Backing Up Media Files Using Your Phone:

  1. Open the apps drawer and launch "My Files"
  2. Swipe to "Local Storage" and tap "Device storage"
  3. Touch the "Menu" icon located in the upper-right corner and tap "Select"
  4. Locate the folders containing the desired media files. Pictures captured with the camera app are found in the "DCIM" folder. Other directories of interest are "Notifications", "Downloads", "Music" etc.
  5. Mark the check box associated with the items you wish to back up
  6. Tap the "Menu" icon and select "Copy"
  7. Tap "SD card" and navigate to the desired backup folder
  8. Tap "Paste here"

Backing Up Media Files Using a Windows Computer:

  1. Establish a USB connection between your smartphone and computer
  2. Swipe the "Status" bar down and tap "Connected as a media device"
  3. Mark the "Media device (MTP)" check box
  4. Click "Open device to view files" in the AutoPlay window on the computer
  5. Navigate to the desired files located on your phone
  6. Copy the files and paste them in the desired backup location on your computer
  7. After the transfer is done, safely disconnect your smartphone by clicking the "Mass Storage Device" icon in the system tray and ejecting the Note 4's drive

Backing Up Media Files on a Mac Computer:

NOTE: Skip the first 3 steps if you have already installed Samsung Kies on your Mac

  1. Visit Kies using your Mac's Internet browser
  2. Click "Download for Mac OS"
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to download and install Kies on your computer
  4. Connect your smartphone to the Mac via USB
  5. Swipe the "Status" bar down and tap "Connected as a media device"
  6. Mark the "Media device" check box
  7. Launch Kies on your computer
  8. In Kies, click the "Back up / restore" tab, followed by the "Backup" tab
  9. Mark the check boxes associated with "Music" and "Photo". To back up all of your files, mark the "Select all items" check box
  10. Click "Backup" and safely disconnect your smartphone from the computer
