Backing Up Apps:

  1. From the home screen, tap "Apps"
  2. Go to "Settings"
  3. Swipe to "User and Backup"
  4. Tap "Backup and reset", and make sure you are signed in with your Google account. If you need to add an account, tap "Backup account" > "Add account" and follow the on-screen steps
  5. Mark the check boxes associated with "Backup account" and "Backup my data" if necessary

Contact Backup

Back Up Contacts on a Samsung or Google Account:

  1. Launch the "Contacts" application
  2. Tap "Settings" > "Merge accounts"
  3. Choose either "Samsung account" or "Google"
  4. Tap "OK" to merge the contacts

Backing Up Contacts on the SD Card:

  1. Tap "Apps" while on the home screen
  2. Go to "Settings" and swipe to "Applications"
  3. Tap "Contacts" > "Contacts to display" > "All contacts"
  4. Tap "Import / Export" > "Export SD card"
  5. Tap "OK" and ensure you remember the backup file's name for future use

Backing Up Media Files

Using the SD Card:

  1. Tap "Apps" from the home screen
  2. Launch "My Files"
  3. Swipe to "Local Storage" and tap "Device storage"
  4. Tap the "Menu" icon located in the top-right corner
  5. Tap "Select" and locate the files you want to back up. NOTE: Media files are usually found in directories such as "Music", "DCIM", "Downloads" and so on
  6. Mark the check boxes next to the items you want to back up
  7. Tap "Menu" and select "Copy"
  8. Tap "SD card" and navigate to the desired backup location
  9. Tap "Paste here"

Back Up Media Files on a Windows PC:

  1. Establish a USB connection between the Samsung Galaxy A5 and your computer
  2. Swipe the "Status" bar down and mark the "Media device (MTP)" check box if necessary
  3. From the AutoPlay window on the computer, click "Open device to view files using Windows Explorer"
  4. Access the "Card" directory and locate the files you wish to back up
  5. Copy the files and paste them in the desired backup location on the computer
  6. Once the transfer is done, eject the phone's storage from the system tray and safely disconnect your smartphone

Back Up Media Files on a Mac Computer:

NOTE: Skip the first 3 steps if Samsung Kies is already installed on your Mac

  1. Open the Internet browser on your Mac and visit Kies
  2. Click "Download for Mac OS"
  3. Follow the on-screen steps to install the software on your computer
  4. Connect the Samsung Galaxy A5 to your PC via USB
  5. If necessary, swipe the "Notification" bar down and mark the "Media Device (MTP)" check box
  6. Launch Kies on the Mac
  7. Access the "Back up / restore" tab and click the "Backup tab"
  8. Mark the check boxes next to "Music", "Photos" and any other type of media file you wish to back up
  9. Click "Backup" and once the transfer is done, eject the phone's storage and safely disconnect the device from the Mac computer
