WARNING! When you factory reset your smartphone, all data located on the phone’s internal memory will be deleted. This includes media files and ringtones, contacts, media files and ringtones, apps etc. Furthermore, all settings will be restored to factory values.

NOTE: Before you master reset the phone, you can visit this thread for instructions on how to back up data. You can also follow this thread for a guide on restoring data.

Factory Reset via Settings:

  1. Open the apps drawer
  2. Launch “Settings
  3. Scroll to “Personal
  4. Tap “Backup and reset
  5. Optionally, enable or disable “Back up my data” and “Restore
  6. Tap “Factory data reset” > “Reset device
  7. Assuming that your phone is protected by a lock screen, enter your PIN / password / pattern to proceed
  8. Tap “Continue” > “Delete all

Factory Reset via Recovery:

NOTE: In case you are unable the factory reset your phone via settings using the method above, you can try resetting the device via Android System Recovery instead. The Recovery menu can be accessed by performing a combination of button presses.

  1. Turn of the phone
  2. Press and hold “Volume Up” and “Home” at the same time
  3. Press and hold “Power
  4. When the “Samsung” logo appears, release “Power
  5. When the “Android” logo appears, release “Volume Up” and “Home” too
  6. Navigate the System Recovery menu using the volume rocker. Press “Volume down” repeatedly to highlight “Wipe data / factory reset
  7. Press “Power” to select the highlighted option
  8. Press “Volume down” to highlight “Yes – delete all user data
  9. Press “Power” to confirm
  10. After your phone has been reset, “Reboot system now” should be highlighted
  11. Press “Power” to reboot your phone

Check for Software Updates:

NOTE: After you have finished factory resetting your phone, it’s recommended to check if new software updates are available for download. To do this:

  1. Tap “Apps” on the home screen
  2. Open “Settings
  3. Scroll to “System
  4. Tap “About device
  5. Check if a new update is available. If applicable, follow the on-screen prompts to download and install the update. NOTE: This process will require at least one reboot)
