WARNING! When you factory reset your phone, all personal data located on the device’s internal memory will be deleted. This includes downloaded content, apps, contacts, media files, ringtones etc. In addition, all settings will be restored to factory values.

NOTE: Data stored on the SD and SIM cards will not be affected by the factory reset. You can visit this thread for instructions on how to back up and restore data on the internal memory.

Factory Reset via Settings:

  1. Tap “Apps” on the home screen
  2. Open “Settings
  3. Scroll to “Personal” and tap “Backup and reset
  4. Enable or disable “Back up my data” and “Automatic restore
  5. When ready, tap “Factory data reset” > “Reset device
  6. In case your phone is protected by a lock screen, enter the PIN / password to confirm
  7. Tap “Continue” > “Delete all” to confirm

Factory Reset via Recovery:

NOTE: In case your phone crashes, freezes, or otherwise it prevents you from resetting it via settings, alternatively you can try resetting the device from the Android System Recovery menu, which can be accessed by performing a combination of button presses.

  1. Turn the phone OFF if necessary
  2. Press and hold “Power”, “Home” and “Volume Up” simultaneously
  3. At the “Samsung” logo, release “Power
  4. When the “Android” logo appears, release “Home” and “Volume Up” too
  5. After a couple of minutes you should have access to Android Recovery Menu
  6. Navigate the menu by pressing “volume down” repeatedly, and highlight “Wipe data / factory reset
  7. Press “Power” to select the highlighted option
  8. After the reset is complete, “Reboot system now” should be highlighted
  9. Press “Power” to confirm and reboot your device

Check for OS Updates:

NOTE: Once you factory reset your phone, it’s recommended to see if new updates are available for download. To do this:

  1. Go to “Settings
  2. Scroll to and tap “About device
  3. Verify if a new update is available
  4. If applicable, follow the on-screen instructions to download and install any available updates. (NOTE: the update process will require at least one reboot. Save any unsaved work before proceeding)
