WARNING! When you master reset your device, all data on the phone’s internal memory will be deleted, including apps, downloaded content, ringtones, media files, contacts etc. In addition, all settings will be restored to factory values.
NOTE: Before you factory reset your device, you can visit this thread for back up instructions, and this thread for a guide on how to restore data.
Master Reset via Settings:
- Tap “Apps” on the home screen
- Go to “Settings”
- Scroll to “Personal”
- Tap “Backup and reset”
- Optionally, enable “Back up my data” and “Restore”
- Tap “Factory data reset” > “Reset device”
- If your phone is protected by a lock screen, enter your password / PIN / pattern to proceed
- Tap “Delete all” > “Reset device”
Factory Reset via Android System Recovery:
NOTE: If your phone crashes, freezes, or otherwise prevents you from resetting it via Settings, alternatively you can try applying the reset via the Android System Recovery menu, which can be accessed after performing a combination of button presses.
- First make sure the phone is powered Off
- Next, press and hold “Power”, “Volume Up” and “Home” at the same time
- When the “Samsung” logo appears, release “Power”
- At the “Android” screen, release “Volume Up” and “Home” too
- Once you gain access to the Android Recovery menu, press “Volume down” repeatedly to navigate the menu and highlight “Wipe data / factory reset”
- Press “Power” to select the highlighted option
- Press “Volume down” to highlight “Yes – delete all user data”
- Lastly, press “Power” one last time to confirm
Check for Software Updates:
NOTE: Once you have reset your phone, it’s recommended to check if new OS updates are available for download.
- Tap “Apps” on the home screen
- Go to “Settings”
- Scroll to “System” and tap “About device”
- Check if an update is available
- If applicable, follow the on-screen steps to download and install any available updates. (NOTE: the update process will require at least one reboot)
