WARNING! When you factory reset your phone, all personal data stored on the device’s internal memory will be deleted. This includes media files and ringtones, downloaded content, contacts, apps etc. Additionally, all settings will be restored to factory values.

NOTE: Data stored on the SD and SIM cards will not be affected by the reset. You can visit this thread for instructions on how to back up and restore data on the phone.

Factory Reset via Settings:

  1. Open the apps drawer and launch “Settings
  2. Scroll to “Personal” and tap “Backup and reset
  3. Optionally, enable or disable “Back up my data” and “Automatic restore
  4. Tap “Factory data reset” > “Reset device
  5. In case your phone is protected by a lock screen, enter your PIN / pattern / password to proceed
  6. Tap “Continue” > “Delete all

Factory Reset via Recovery:

NOTE: In case your phone crashes, freezes, or otherwise is preventing you from resetting it via Settings, alternatively you can try resetting the phone from Android System Recovery. To access Recovery mode:

  1. Turn the phone Off if necessary
  2. Next, press and hold “Power”, “Home” and “Volume Up” simultaneously
  3. At the “Samsung” logo, release “Power
  4. At the “Android” logo, release “Home” and “Volume Up
  5. Wait for access to Android Recovery and then release all the keys
  6. In Recovery, press “volume down” repeatedly to navigate the menu and highlight “Wipe data / factory reset
  7. Press “Power” to select the highlighted option
  8. After the reset is done, highlight “Reboot system now” if necessary
  9. Press “Power” to confirm and reboot your device

Check for OS Updates:

NOTE: After you factory reset your phone, it’s recommended to check if new software updates are available for download. To do this:

  1. Launch “Settings
  2. Scroll to and tap “About device
  3. Check if a new update is available
  4. If applicable, follow the on-screen prompts to apply available updates. NOTE: the update process will require at least one reboot
