The difference between 16 and 40 channel ringtones is exactly that, one can play 40 channels/instruments/notes at the same time while the other can only play 16. I've never had a problem with 16 channel ringtones, anything more than that isn't necessary, but a nice bonus :-).

And the 40-poly phones render the ringtone better. I've had both a 16 and 40 poly phone. With simple Rt it's fine. But with complex Ringtones, you'll notice the difference.
