Samsung 317 . . .Speaker???

I just recently purchased a used samsung 317 and to my amazement it has no speakerphone or so I think. I can sometimes close the phone and if the person I am talking to is still talking it gets amplified like a speakerphone. Is this some freak screwup or am I simply too stupid to find the speakerphone feature that is not in any menu or printed in any part of the book i can locate??
