I see there was a post last year on this subject, but maybe a work around has been found by now, so I'm bringing it back up.

On the A670 camera, there doesn't seem to be a way to turn off the 'shutter sound' when using the camera. Even in Silent mode, it will make the shutter sound. I work on a soundstage and often would like to take a picture while we are rolling sound. That silly shutter noise would ruin the take, so I can't use the camera when we are rolling. I see you can change the sound, but there are a limited number of choices.

One though would be if there is a way to replace one of those shutter sounds with another sound file that was basically silent. I just don't know if there is a way to do that. Anyone else have a thought or hack for this?

My previous phone - Audiovox 8900 camera phone has the 'silent' option too. It is even mentioned in the manual.

Here is a quote from my Audiovox 8900 manual:

    "SHUTTER SOUND
Press [MENU]. Select Shutter 1, Shutter 2, or Shutter 3, then press [OK] to save it. If your phone's ringer is set to Silence, no shutter sound will be heard."

The Audiovox phone is still rather new and is still available for purchase. So, unless this 'federal law' is brand new, I'd like to have more evidence about that claim. My friend's LG camera phone also has no shutter sound in silent mode.

Please provide some evidence of this 'Federal Law.' It's an interesting claim, but I'd like to have some evidence to back it up. Today's digital cameras are as small as my phone or even smaller... so I don't think this law would make much sense. Especially when there are legitimate reasons for not wanting a shutter sound (like me taking pictures on a sound stage when we are rolling film). If people are going to use their phone's for bad reasons, there should be a strong penalty when they are caught. The solution should not be to force the phone to make a noise. It makes my phone's camera useless on a sound stage.

Both the House and Senate have passed a bill imposing penalties on anyone caught photographing or videotaping a person without his or her consent in a place where they can reasonable expect privacy. It includes hidden video cameras and now cell phone cameras.

The bill got extra wind when dressing room and bathroom violations began popping up across the country.

Some lawmakers who disagree with the strict penalties favor technological fixes, like adding a beep or flash when a shot is taken.

Most cell phone companies haven't outwardly criticized the law, but say at best, it will be very difficult to enforce. Punishment includes fines of up to $100,000, up to a year in prison or both

ok.. so that explains it. The law does not require a shutter sound.. but some lawmakers prefer that option instead of the strict penalties. I am more for the strict penalties.. forcing the sound makes my camera useless on a soundstage.
