Ok, just got my new x497 today (I left my x427 in my pants pocket and washed them - all you klutzes out there, take not and learn from my mistake!) and, like the x427, its default ringtones made me cry a little on the inside.

I had never tried a custom ringtone before, so I chopped off part of a song on my computer, converted it to an mp3, sent it over to my Apache server (just a personal web server running on Linux), and downloaded it from the phone using GPRS and the "Go To URL." No errors or anything, but when I tried to play it I heard nothing but a clicking noise coming from the speaker.

I tried again using a lower bitrate. I had used 128kbps the first time, which I realized was really stupid for a cell phone, so I tried 24kbps because I had seen it recommended on a ringtone tutorial somewhere. This yielded the same result, although the mp3 played perfectly on the computer when I checked it there. The phone came preloaded with a couple of mp3's that played fine, so I know it supports them somehow.

Using a Yamaha program that I saw recommended somewhere - at these forums, I believe- I converted the original .wav to an .mmf file, 8khz. Nope. 4khz, the only other option, didn't work either. However, the .mmf's were a different kind of "not work." The phone interrupted the download both times with something along the lines of "Incompatible format." I'm at a loss, and I'm stuck with all these dumb ringtones! Any help is appreciated.

    ***Edit***
Ok, I changed the one factor that I hadn't tried yet; I went with the suggestion to use the coolservice site http://www.coolservice.dk/en/compatibilities.php as suggested by e-reloaded in the MP3 Ringtones topic. So, for future reference, something about home-run servers messes up cell phone downloads. Perhaps the lack of a site certificate? Anyway, thank you much e-reloaded, give yourself a pat on the back if you ever read this, and this issue is resolved.
