OK this cord that you speak of, does the end look like the charger end that you plug into the phone to recharge the battery? If you have your phone set to USB connection, do you see your card in MyComputer? If that is correct did you hit the button that shows add new port? (GPST CONFIG MAN)

Yes, the cord looks like the charger cord, with a USB on one end. I know it is making connection. I have used to to add songs and move pics around. with my phone set to "usb mass storage", I see it on "my computer". if I set it to "no connection", It does not show up at all. and when it shows up on "my computer", nothing is displayed when I click the "add new ports" button.

Now this is interesting, what is the OS that you are using? I have not used vista so I hope if you are using Vista then it is basically the same as in XP. You need to check the computers device manager. I would boot the system to safe mode because windows has a tendency to hide UNKNOWNS in the DM. Once in save mode Right Click on my computer you may have to click start then go up to my computer if you do not have the icon enabled in safe mode. On the pop up menu you should have a choice to manage choose that option then about half way down you have the option for the device manager, check for splats in the device manager, check under modems and also under the USB sections under the modem if it is there it should read alltel or samsung phone and in the usb it should also refer to one of those two companies. IF YOU DO NOT SEE SAMSUNG/ALTELL anywhere in your device manager you do not have to phone installed properly. If it does read samsung/ alltel then you have the right USB driver installed on the system. I would still remove the "hardware" from the device manager listing and reboot the system and let the system reinstall the drivers provided it you do have the correct drivers installed on the system

Samsung Muse SCH-U706 - read lots, still hesitant

    Hi:

My kid just got an SCH-U706 Samsung Muse (Alltel).

I have never done this type of ring-tone-hacking (pre-newbie). I don't think I trust myself to get the right setup for QPST. I have read several threads on a few forums, but still feel like I don't have this figured out enough to experiment with someone else's new phone...

Well, I did just try editing an MP3 file and copying it (just ordinary XP file methods) to my own phone's (LG Wave) MicroSD card in a card reader on the PC, to the same directory as a working mp3 ringtone downloaded from the Web. This file works as a ringer and as an alarm clock sound. (There must be Latent Luddite tendencies - the only ringtone I was motivated to add for myself was a recording of a mechanical brass bell ringer - the way phones sounded before they became fragile :O)

The phone wouldn't open a menu (ringers or sounds, I forget) afterward (waiting and waiting). I did remove the file by putting the microSD card back in the PC card reader & deleting if from the directory and the phone works again. My clip must have had wrong attributes I guess...or worse...

That didn't give my kid confidence in me trying anything risky like QPST, finding the right drivers, etc.

So, to undertake a less risky approach than QPST with the SamsungMuse/706, what options do I have?

    0) Wait for BitPim compatibility...if possible...

    1) What about ringtone editor software?

I am not sure I understand completely, but it looks like I have read about two methods (that may overlap and maybe aren't really two different ones) - one editor directs you to create an account on some site that you upload your files to - then from there I'm not sure - do they 'send' them to your phone number, or do you have to set up cellphone web access and retrieve them? Is this because of a technique that is required to get them to the phone the right way, or to get you to pay a subscription fee?

If 'sending' compatible ( to be defined) ringtones to the user phone number works, are they handled as text messages with attachments...or what else?
Like I said - no clue on my part-

    2) USB cable or Bluetooth Dongle at PC?

I imagine these both depend on having a working software method of adequate file transfer and control - back to the BitPim incompatibility and QPST risk issues... :O(

    3) ?

    Thanks

    Murray

If you have unlimited text messaging with your plan the way to go
is download a program called audacity. It is a sound editor that is
freeware, it is best to donate some funds to them for bringing this little
program for us to use. You will also need libmp3lame-win-3.97.zip make sure
you extract it to the audacity folder so you can save your file to an MP3 file.
You cannot exceed 300 kb for the file to txt to the phone you want to send the MP3.
When that person opens the file it will play choose options and scroll to the bottom
of the list and you can choose to save the file to mysounds and then you can apply it
    as a ringtone from there.

Re: Alltel samsung muse (sch-u706) Difficulty getting ringtones

To anyone who might be able to help. I downloaded a cdma driver and installed it. then downloaded QPST. When I go to configuration, click ports, then add new port, nothing shows up. I can switch to mass usb, modem, no connection and still nothing. My phone does show up in "my computer" when switched to "mass usb". any ideas on what i am doing wrong? I just want to add some ringtones.

Re: Alltel samsung muse (sch-u706) Difficulty getting ringtones

I just installed QPST on a Gateway 650 just to see what it took to get QPST to work.

#1. Installed Samsung PC Studio 3 software (I did not update the software)
#2. Went to my phone went to SETTINGS> Phone Settings > PC Connection > NO CONNECTION Click OK then back back to the Home Screen
#3. Plugged phone into data cable
    #4. Started QPST CONFIGURATION
#5. Went to PORTS (Middle tab out of 3 tabs)
#6. At the bottom right of this screen you have the option to ADD NEW PORT click that one!
#7. Beings I have several different phones (the MUSE being my GFs' phone) I had the choice of TWO DIFFERENT USB PORTS the first one on com 3 was for my
MOTO Q and the second one is for the MUSE you should see at least TWO COM PORTS on this screen one of them is for your MUSE and it should show USB

It will take a minute or two to connect to your phone but it should be straight forward from here

this is what her folder looks like as it sits now

    /ff/brew/mod/18067/BreakinDishesRT.mp3|0|5

Ya, I'm doing something way wrong. All I have is COM1 "enabled" "no Phone" and COM 2 "waiting" "n/a" when I click on add new port, all fields are blank.

Yes I had that same issue when I installed the stuff the first time, boot your system into safe mode then take a look at the Device Manager to see if you have any cdma phones installed under the modem section and if you have any yellow exclamamtion marks under the USB secetion. Remove the Samsung from the modems section and also any USB devices not installed correctly. Reboot into windows and then plug your phone in. It should search for the drivers for the phone and get them installed the only way it will not find the drivers is if the drivers were not installed in the right directory.
