Charging Problem

last night i had three bars of battery life on my phone left. I woke up the phone was dead, and now it won't turn on. I bought a new charger and the only thing that shows up is the verizon wireless right as i plug it into the charger. After that it goes blank again. Can anybody help? Do i need a new battery or is the charging port going bad?
