I am in the process of setting up some ringtones for my new Samsung A650. I keep seeing posts referring to ringtones for a specific phone. Is this just for those who don't know what format their phone can handle?? Since I already know the A650 will handle midi. I can just use any midi file of the righ length that I can lay my hands on...right? Or am I wrong? Is there something else that needs to factor in??

    Yes and no.

My Motorola will take about any midi I upload.

With Nokia phones, it's A LOT trickier.
Many models need sp-midi (not type-1 or type-0), and you have to keep in mind that it only plays a certain number of notes simultaneously.
If you have a 4-chord model, and your midi has, say, 10 chords, it's going to sound really bad, if it plays at all.

The fact that a Midi plays fine on Motorola, Siemens or SonyEricsson does NOT mean it will work on a Nokia!
At least, not without extra work.

With Samsung, I wouldn't worry too much. Max. chords, probably. Most Samsung phones use mmf-Tones, though, not midi.
If there's any problems, try using PSMPlayer to convert midi to mmf.

And how do I find out about the type of midi? I have no clue, seriously, and would really like to download the tones I can use on my nokia. Thanks for help!

Take about any midi you find on here, and run it through "Nokia SoundConverter" (included in Nokia PC Suite, which is free).

It'll convert your midi to sp-midi and allow you to optimize it for your phone.
