Yes boss.... because #1. Only John or I could have provided that information as all of it is customizable through the user CP (well... actually, only John since he made changes this week and I hadn't looked it up yet), and #2. Perception of text is up to the beholder. OBX's response,

while accurate (he could not have known that info) Could be interpereted in a number of ways: sincerity, sarcastic jest, or slightly insulted that PW rebuffed the offering of what knowledge he had and was able to post immediately while the thread waited for others' attention....

Thanks OBX for chiming in with the immediate ... You did just what we do here, you gave some immediate information and, in doing so, bumped the thread to where someone else could see it and add their 2 cents ....

On the other topic, if you have kids you also need to know that the meaning of the word "ignorant" has changed in its popular usage... it is an insult that is related to its original definition, certainly, but holds, as Brad mentioned, a negative connotation that goes beyond "lack of knowledge" to "you're stupid and you have no hope of overcoming it so I'm just that much better than you" ... kids are nice, huh? Too bad the young don't all share our ardor for the thesaurus...(BTW, this sparked an interesting conversation 'tween my friend the linguist and I in reference to the verbal habits of our students... thanks )

My intent in forums is not malicious, just to be clear on that. I can appreciate OBX being self deprecating, but didn't want to believe he was ignorant in the popular negative connotation, and in a round about way attempted to let him off the hook on that one. (I figure, if one has moderator rank, they would indeed be willing to learn and boost their reputation as a natural consequence of increasing knowledge gained and shared).
I am very aware that kids have their lingo or use english in a way that suits them. If I have to assume or misinterpret what a person means, doesn't that then add to the possiblity of misunderstanding? And don't misunderstandings often escalate into unnecessary heated disagreements? I don't imagine we have too many kids (let me clarify, persons under the age of 18) posting here.
Gotta say, it's been an interesting dialogue here. End call. Smiles.

We do have quite a number of young'uns on CPF.... we find that kids are probably more unwilling to consult the manual that came with their phone than adults! ... especially because their parents come home with the free, basic phone and the kiddos want to pimp it out...

Suddenly I feel old.... the only thing I got to pimp out were book covers....

Let's face it, the manual isn't the most comprehensible thing out there, but you have a point. There are many, many people out there who don't bother with manuals, rules, etc. We live in an increasingly I want it and I want it now, the rules don't apply to me and to heck with anybody else mentality. Manual? I don't need no stinkin' manual! Don't even get me started about parents who give in to their kid's whims. My 19 yr old is appalled by some of his peers who get everything handed to them by mumsy and daddy..not by the fact thaey have stuff he doesn't, but by the exaggerated sense of entitlement they display as a result. "nuff said, stppeng down off my soapbox. End call. Smiles.

i'm gone for 4 days and i miss this great conversation! since i came in on the tail-end, i won't comment too much. but i do want to say that in my opinion, everyone has made some pretty valid points. it made for some great reading.

our world is ever-changing, influencing every aspect of our lives. it doesn't matter if you are talking about politics, language, technology, or entertainment. without our innovative and adaptive nature, we would not be here debating english as we probably would not be speaking it. nor would we be discussing cell phones, a technology that would not have been invented.

I concede, to an extent, in the matter of definition and offer the word vernacular as my reason for doing so.
WB n1ckel5--for you, two words...spontaneity and serendipity, 2 concepts that, imho, make life an wonderful adventure. It is a pleasure to share ideas and of course, have the mysteries of cell phone technology revealed here. It fuels my nerdish spirit and educates my oh so non-geek person. Smiles.

    lol

if technology is an example of serendipity, i hope to one day stumble across an invention that solves the world's dependancy on oil.

i'm much more comfortable in thinking that our current and future state of being is derived from scientific analysis and applied concepts.

example: cellular phones (or telephones) are the result of analyzing the discovered concept of sound's wave-like properties and the manipulation of electron movement to form electricity and circuits.

but to agree with you, it takes a small discovery to build off of. you can't build an airplane without understanding gravity!

Alternatives HAVE been discovered..they are called biofuels and solar power. Both in use, but not to the extent that makes a difference on our dependency on oil. Petroleum industry is huge and goes back to the earlier part of last century. Political and business alliances were formed back then and have only increased in their stranglehold. We the people are at their mercy. It seems to me, that those in power, politically, economically and socially really have no real interest in what is truly best for our nation and it's people...they seem to simply want to increase their power and squash yours and mine to nothingness. My apologies, but I am feeling terribly jaded this day. Can anybody offer proof otherwise?

when i made that comment, i meant that i would have a feasable means to replace oil. something that consumers would actually buy into.

despite the oil industry's influence, if a car was available with a 'free' energy source, we would buy it. solar is free, but not practical. biofuels are not readily available. that is why i chose that topic to make my point, not to open an oil debate.

The reality is biofuels could be ready and available in a relatively short time...but big business and politics create major obsatcle to that happening. Corn farmers for example, get subsidized for growing crops of which a huge portion goes to waste. Hemp, is a potential resource that is bug and disease resistant, will grow in hugely diverse environments and has a plethora of uses, biofuel being one, is completey renewable and has lower watering needs. The Emperor Wears No Clothes by Jack Herer is a most enlightening, informative book, that gives astounding details with legitimate noted sources of reference. You can read portions at www.jackherer.com
History, politics, big business, technology, chemistry, biology, medicine, journalism, and more intertwine for a truly fascinating look at how this country is truly run and how policies come to be. I challenge you to take a serious look, then talk to me about feasibility and relative ready availability.

Not to sound rude, but you missed the point.

But despite what mr. herer has to say about all of the above mentioned, it ultimately comes down to the consumer. So until the consumer is ready to invest into these fuels, they will not become readily available. Regardless of who is influencing the consumer, this is reality.

My point was more along the lines of bringing a new technology to center stage that would be so innovative that consumers would abandon the convenience and standardness of gasoline.

In that this discussion has digressed from the theme of this forum, and in the interest of maintaining some propriety here, I suggest moving this to chit chat, where I shall start a new thread: Change of venue; discussion con't.
