    Re: w580i Ringtones and DRM

Hi, I got the DRM packager thing and I converted the song but whenever I transfer it to the phone, it automatically sends it to the other section of music.

If this configuration for the DRM correct:
    DRM method: forward-lock
and the output folders are checked.

and then press create DRM content.

when i check my folder for the conversion I see this icon thats like a box with a lock. Is that correct?

When i try dumping that icon in the file manager it sends the file to the phone but putis it in the other section. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

After DRMing the file, it should create a file with the same name but with a extension ".dm" instead of ".mp3" and yes it should have a lock box as the file icon, then you should connect the phone to the computer using the USB cable and select phone mode on the phone. Use the file manager ("right click" on the Ericsson icon in the task tray and select file manager). Double click the phone icon in the file manager. You will see 2 folders in the newly opend window. Drag & drop the DRMed file into the empty area and NOT the folders. Once transfer is done the phone will prompt you for what you want the file to be used as, you then can select the file as ringtone.

    Re: w580i Ringtones and DRM

I checked, and it is modified to .dm file not .mp3. I didn't drop in into the files, just into the empty space and I received the popup as to what I would like to use it for but the problem now is that it won't let me select ringtone or contact ringtone. I don't know whats wrong with it. On my desktop, I also can't play the file too because I don't have the program to play it with. Could this be the problem? I was wondering, after I drop the file off, it says on my phone that its receiving the file. After its received, it says that it has been stored in the music folder on the memory stick, is this right?

    Re: w580i Ringtones and DRM

    Hey guys!

I just got the Sony Ericsson W580i, and I've been wanting to set my OWN files as ringtones. It isn't working out so hot because it says that it "cannot set these files as ringtones". I'm sure there's a way to do it because I've read here that some people have gotten it to work. I'm so confused and frustrated right now. If anybody has any help, PLEASE please help me (:

I read some help that has been given to others, but I don't understand it.
Where do I find the DRM settings?
Do I have to install the 'Disc to Phone' cd?

    Extremely Confused,
    Adrenna ):

I have created the .dm file, but I don't have the file manager that everyone has referred to. Was there some software you all got when you got the phone? I didn't see anything on the dev site. The only way I can see the phone on my computer is when I select file transfer. If I select phone, my computer doesn't seem to recognize it.

Just kidding - found the software download at sonyericsson.com/support - Sony Ericsson PC Suite 2.10.38 (for Windows Vista/XP). Let you know how that works.

If your mp3 is too big, sometimes the phone won't let you use it as ringtone. Try a smaller file first. After you got the file transferred over to the phone in phone mode, you can try disconnecting the USB cable and press the center button on the phone to select file manager then go into the music folder to locate your just transferred file and it should allow you to play it and also let you use it as ringtone.

The DRM Packager is on Ericsson's developer's site, you can goggle "DRM packager" and it should bring up the link for it.

You'll also need to install the software that comes with the phone (A CD that came with your phone, or you can download the PC suite from the Ericsson site) onto your computer.

Then just follow the instructions posted earlier in this thread.

So, I downloaded the software from the support site (didn't come with my phone), but it still won't recognize my phone. I know it's not my USB driver because I can connect for file transfer. It also makes the device disconnect sound when I unplug it from phone mode.

    Any thoughts?

humm... I am using XP and my PC suite version is 2.0.58 and it is working fine with my w580i. What happens when you uninstall the software and connect the USB cable to your computer in phone mode? Does Vista/XP dectects the phone, if so what does windows identify the phone as? Maybe you had installed some generic windows phone driver or something when you were doing the file transfer before installing the PC suite. If you have access to another computer I would install the PC suite on that "untouched" computer to makesure your phone will be recognized first.

    Re: w580i Ringtones and DRM

After uninstalling the SE PC Suite software, it does the same thing as before I installed it when I use phone mode. I don't see anything in Winows Explorer, but when I unplug it, I hear the hardware disconnect sound. I'm running Vista, and the latest version of the software. I don't think I can install an earlier version.
I didn't install anything else because the directions in my manual say to click "cancel" if it tries to say I need to install a driver when I connect the phone.
I'll see if I can install the PC Suite on my work computer tomorrow. Thanks for your help. Let me know if you have any other thoughts.

Well, I got it to pull up at my work computer, I converted a file, moved it over as described above, and it still won't let me use it as a ringtone
Do you know what size of file works best? Do you have a preferred way to make a mp3 shorter?

hummm... how big (minutes) is the mp3 you are trying to make into ringtone? Anyways, you can try "Ringtone Gold". It allows you trim potion of a MP3.

The smallest mp3 file I have here is 2,000 KB. I read something about it having to be 600. Is that right? I'm downloading ringtone gold now...
