    Re: w580i Ringtones and DRM

The ringtone gold I downloaded from download.com only lets you create 5-second clips unless you buy the complete version. I'm going to try Audacity when I get home, unless you have any other suggestions.
Good news is that the 5-second clip did work

Ok, looks like all it has to do with is the size of the file. I stuck a 30 second mp3 just using audacity to shorten it, and I could select it as a ringtone (not even using the phone mode). Thanks for your help.

I'm sure there's a way to do it because I've read here that some people have gotten it to work. I'm so confused and frustrated right now. If anybody has any help, PLEASE please help me (:

I read some help that has been given to others, but I don't understand it.
Where do I find the DRM settings?
Do I have to install the 'Disc to Phone' cd?

    Hi Adrenna,

It seems the biggest issue is the size of the file. Try using Audacity or something similar to edit your song and make it shorter. Then, move it over to your phone, and you should be able to use as ringtone.

Hi everyone! I'm the real noob here. I just got my new w580i and was bummed when I found out that I couldn't use my own songs as ringtones. I read all of your guys' previous posts, but I'm totally lost because I'm not a technological type of person. Could you guys please explain everything step by step, and if I need to download anything, could you please post the link? Is it true that you can only use about 30 seconds of a song instead of the whole song? Anyhow, what would be even better is if someone could do an instructional type of video showing everyone how to do it (Eman? since you seem to know the most?). It would be great! Thanks a lot guys!

    Hey Stacy,
For me (AT&T Wireless customer), the easiest way to get a song on my phone was to create a shorter clip of a song. If you have the same service as me, I would suggest this. You can download the original manufacturer firmware and install, but this voids your contract, and I wouldn't suggest it for a non-technological type
So, download Audacity (unless you have music editing software on your computer already), just google "download audacity", open your song (File > Open), create a 30-second clip (select 30 seconds of the song, then use file > export as mp3), and copy over to your Ringtones folder. That way you can use it as a general ringtone, or specific to someone in your contacts. then you can use as ringtone, and it should be ok.

Well i got my phone the other day and i still can't figure it out with all of the help you guys have already provided. I have tried both ways. I downloaded the DRM thing and tried the audacity thing.

    Audacity

ok for some reason i cant export the 30 sec clip to an MP3. I downloaded some other LAME thing, which it said i needed and it still wont do it. I lost.

    DRM

OK i can get the song DRM'ed and it comes up with the lock box file. All that part seems ok. I am haveing the same problem as above as in my PC will not let me see the ericsson tray down in the task bar. I cant find it anywhere, even when i explore for it. It does come up if i do File Treansfer though. I have windows XP and no other computer to try this on. Please help. What am i missing. Thanks in Advance for any help.

PS if someone would like my Cell # i will be more than happy to PM it to you for any help. I am in California. Thanks Again. ~ Scott

Well today i restored my computer and re-did everything and i still cant get an icon to pop up in tha task bar. There is one there but it is for safely removing the phone. I even tried it with the phone off and still no luck, or at least i dont think so. At least this time it brought up an icone but it was for the mass storage device. Well any help is appreciated. Thanks in Advance. ~ Scott

If you have a newer Mac would you not be able to just bluetooth it across?

Scoot, jOmO182 and anyone else having trouble using MP3's as your ringtones, please refer to the STICKY under the SONY ERICSSON thread.

    http://cellphoneforums.net/sony-eric...nes-w580i.html

Very easy to follow instructions. You DON'T need to make things smaller, you can use a regular MP3 full size if you want OR you can find a tool (I use Virtual DJ myself) to create MP3 ringtones.
