This is a "How To" make MP3's work as Ring tones on your W580i phone.

As you know, Rogers (and perhaps other companies) have blocked you from using an MP3 as a ringtone unless you download it from them. But what if you already own an MP3 you've purchased via online? Can you use it? NOPE! Even know you've already paid for it legally, you still can't use it as a ringtone.... UNTIL NOW!!!

The following shows you how to use MP3's as ringtones. If your using a Sony Ericsson phone you'd be using their software you got with your phone. If your using a different phone, use that software. I would however like to say out loud... I DO NOT TAKE ANY CREDIT FOR THIS!!!! I have done a lot of riesearch over the last while to find this information. The example I'm using is by using my Sony Ericsson W580i. I'm pretty darn sure this will work on any Rogers phones. If not, please say something so I may edit it.

    Dalton

    Step 1.

Download and install the Sony Ericsson Digital Rights Management Packager
    Windows : My Account
    Mac: My Account

    Step 2.

Select a mp3 you would like to protect (use as a ringtone).

    Step 3.

    Run DRM Packager
    Start->Programs-> Sony Ericsson-> DRM Packager-> DRM Packager
Go to File, add files and select the mp3 you would like to use.

    Step 4. (Configuration)

Go to Options -> Configuration -> and select combined delivery and also uncheck
“ Place rights in separate folder” and click the little box with the … on it and place where you want them to go (ex. My Documents/My Music folder) click OK
A window will pop up saying “Before proceeding with the combined delivery…. “
Click OK. Use the following info to fill in the blanks.
    Content ID: myCellPhone @ Blah.com
    Enable right = checked
Check Start time checked and date set to (which ever today’s date is)
Check End time checked and date set to (which ever today’s date is but year 2015)
    click OK

Step 5 Creating the dm file(s)

Click on your MP3 file to highlight it
    Click on Create DRM content
Now you can send this file to your device , you will be able to set this mp3 as a ringtone.

Adding new file to your phone

    1. Plug in your W580i or other cell phone. IMPORTANT: Choose Phone Mode
    2. Go to START – ALL PROGRAMS – SONY ERICSSON – SONY ERICSSON PC SUITE.
    3. Then go to your little phone icon by your clock (bottom right corner)
    4. Right click on phone icon and scroll up to File Manager and click on it
    5. MyPhoneExplorer. Will open, click on “Your phone” icon so Memory Stick and Phone Memory folders show.
    6. Minimize that window so it takes up only half your screen. Then pull up the folder you put the “adjusted” MP3 file you wanted to use as a ringtone. Minimize that too to half the screen so you can see that window AND the MyPhoneExplorer window at the same time. High light the .DM file you made out of your MP3 and drag it to the MyPhoneExplorer and put it under the Memory Stick folder and the Phone Memory folder.
    7. IMPORTANT: Do not go into memory stick or phone memory. It will take a bit of time to transfer. Check your phone. It will have a pop up saying you have transferred a music file, click yes to install it into the Music folder.
After that another pop up will come up asking you how to use it. In the list of options, choose "Ring tone" and you are done!

YOUR DONE!! Now enjoy your ringtone!!!

    No.

I'm kidding. Go for it. Just do me a favor though. Come back here to this section and give me feedback on what you used to get MP3's to work on your phone and what service your with and if it worked. You know... all the details so we can help others.

1.this is most likely what I will have to do to get my ringtones to work on service through AT&T?
    2. to start downloading, do I click on my accountthat is highlighted in the steps above? then enter the verification code?

Re: "How to" MP3 your Ringtones for the W580i

Good question. I haven't seen that problem before. What I'd suggest is uninstall the program and then reinstall it. Let the DRM make it's own folder and then work from there. There should be no problems with that. It might take you a while to find your new mp3 but it should be ok. Sorry it took a while to return message, take ONE little sleeping pill to help you sleep and knocks you on your ass for hours!!! LOL

Let me know if this worked.

Kevin, follow the instructions, you shouldn't have a problem. If you read them, it states NOT to put them into any particular folder. The Explorer folder will show your memory card and the phone memory. Don't put them into either or, just put your .dm file under those folders. The phone will holla at you asking you were to put this. Put it with what ever option it gives you. Then once your done and have disconnected the phone, go find that file and then place it in the "Ringtones" folder in your phone memory. It's that easy.

Holla if you have more questions.

Re: "How to" MP3 your Ringtones for the W580i

All the steps with creating the .dm file worked great but I am having a problem with sending it to my phone using MyPhoneExplorer...

While I'm uploading the dm file to my phone it gives me an error..

    "Error During Upload:<<File name>>.dm
    OBEX Errorcode: 00 - Phone didn't answer"

The upload comes to a hault and the file doesn't get transfered...
    any ideas on that one?

I've also tried to transfer the file to my phone without the "MyPhoneExplorer" program and it does send the file to my phone but it doesn't give me the option to make it a ringtone, it just puts it in my "others" folder in my phone and doesn't let me utilize it as anything...

First I want to say thankyou to Dalton for taking the time to try to help people out with their phone. It worked on my g/f metro pink unlocked phone. I didn't have a problem with any of it. instructions were simple and right.

Re: "How to" MP3 your Ringtones for the W580i

Im new here but Dalton I wanna say thx, although im having a prob of my own. I have the SE W580i and im also with Rogers.

Everything worked fine until the very last step. I get a popup on my phone but its not the right one. It says 'file saved in ''others'' folder on memory stick'. I tryed taking out the MS but then it did the same but on the phone's memory.

I did see on your post that the protected file must not go in the Memory stick or phone memory and I did all that. Im stuck and i really had gotten my hopes up about all this.

I need help, feedback ohh please!

Re: "How to" MP3 your Ringtones for the W580i

Easy... yes, it goes to OTHER on your memory stick (by default), then when your finished bring over ringtones and the phone is off the cord to the computer, let the phone reset itself, and then go find the ringtones you downloaded. Sadly, only can do one by one. Find the ringtone, scroll over it, click on MORE, Manage file, Move then it will give you an option where to put it. Make sense? Sorry, I would have replied sooner but I was at work last night. Thankfully I'm off for the next 3 weeks!!! VACATIONS BABY!

Anywho, let me know if it works.
