So, the Sony Xperia Z1 has been announced and, so far, it seems to be doing pretty well. But, is the smart phone really the future of smart phones or is it just another boring upgrade like the Samsung Galaxy Note III? The only way to find out is to compare it with another exceptional smart phone, the LG G2. The LG G2 is, by far, the best smart phone LG has ever released. Can you say the same for the Sony Xperia Z1? No doubt, it is the best but, if you compare it with the likes of the Sony Xperia Z Ultra or even the Sony Xperia Z for that matter, it isn't that much better. Is it better than the LG G2? Read on to find out...

Size and weight

Sony has made some pretty compact smart phones in the Xperia Z and Xperia Z Ultra, but the Xperia Z1 doesn’t follow suit. It measures 144.4 x 73.9 x 8.5 mm while the LG G2 measures 138.5 x 70.9 x 8.9 mm. The Xperia Z1 is thinner, but the LG G2 has a bigger display and is still smaller. Even in terms of weight, the Xperia Z1 measures 170 g while the LG G2 measures 143 g. I will say that this is a major step back as far as Sony is concerned. I’m sure they could have done more with their latest smart phone. Then again, maybe the size is because of the large camera?

Since the LG G2 is the more compact and lighter smart phone, it gets this point.

Display

In terms of display size, the Xperia Z1 has a 5.0” TFT touch screen while the LG G2 has a 5.2” IPS LCD touch screen. What I can’t understand about Sony is why they are still relying on TFT technology for their smart phones? I think it’s high time they upgrade to either AMOLED or LCD technology. Though, when it comes to pixel density, Sony seems to have everything in order. The Xperia Z1 has a pixel density of 441 ppi while the LG G2 has a pixel density of 423 ppi.

Both smart phones have their pros and cons as far as the display is concerned and therefore, I will call this point a draw.

Memory & Storage

Both smart phones come with 2 GB of RAM and a maximum clocking speed of 800 MHz. You can expect both smart phones to be quite fast in terms of operating speed (Maybe even the fastest in the industry?). As far as storage is concerned, the LG G2 is available with either 16 or 32 GB of internal memory while the Xperia Z1 comes with an internal memory of 16 GB. But, the Xperia Z1 comes with expandable storage capabilities up to 64 GB while the LG G2 has no storage expansion capabilities.

The Xperia Z1 picks up this point for its storage expansion capabilities.

Camera

The camera is one of the main improvements in the Xperia Z1. It comes with a 20.7 MP camera although I am a little disappointed that it only has an LED flash. It even has a 2 MP camera on the front and supports Full HD video recording on both the front and rear cameras. It comes with a wide range of features including digital image stabilization. One of the biggest advantages the LG G2 with its 13 MP camera has is optical image stabilization. It has a 2.1 MP front camera and also supports full HD video recording through both its cameras. What’s more, the rear camera records videos at 60 fps.

I will call this point a draw since both smart phones have cameras with quite impressive photography capabilities.

OS & Performance

Both smart phones come with Android 4.2.2 (JellyBean) and as far as I can tell, any upgrades to Android 4.3 will be simultaneous for both. As far as the performance is concerned, both smart phones are almost the same. Both come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 chip. But the LG G2 comes with a quad core, 2260 MHz, Krait 330 processor while the Xperia Z1 comes with a quad core, 2200 MHz, Krait 330 processor. It’s just a slight difference. Both smart phones have the same, Adreno 330 graphics processors as well.

It would be unfair to award this point to the LG G2 for just an extra 60 MHz and that’s why it’s another draw.

Battery

Both these smart phones come with 3,000 mAh batteries. The Xperia Z1 has a standby time of around 37 days which is quite outstanding considering it uses a TFT display. I wonder what the standby time would be like if they used better display technology. There is no information available as far as the standby time of the LG G2 is concerned but I’m sure it is around the same, if not more. After all, LG smart phones do have outstanding battery lives.

This point is a draw as well.

Price

The 16 GB version of the LG G2 is expected to sell for $ 603 (free of contract) while the Xperia Z1 is rumored to cost something around $ 600 to $ 650 as well. Both smart phones are well worth their price tags. Don’t forget, the Xperia Z1 is water and dust proof as well.

Since both smart phones are well worth their price tags and there isn’t too much of a difference between the prices of both smart phones, this point is a draw.

Conclusion

The final score is 1 point each. I can’t believe all the hype about the Sony Xperia Z1 managed to earn it just a single point against the LG G2, that too for its storage capabilities. On the other hand, the LG G2 has performed better than expected and even managed to pick up a point for being more compact and lighter. If you have to choose between both these smart phones, I guess it all comes down to which brand is more trustworthy? Which one would you choose?
