It's unknown whether the Sony Xperia Ion will receive the official Android 4.4 update, but you can still take advantage of Google's latest OS regardless. Thanks to custom ROMs, you can experience Android 4.4 and its features on your Xperia Ion, as long as you're willing to tinker a bit with your device.

This is a guide that allows you to flash the Android 4.4-based PureSlim Custom ROM on the Sony Xperia Ion. Keep in mind that this is not an official release from Sony. Also, while the ROM is based on PureSlim, the package has been created by XDA members and developers and it's not an official PureSlim release. This means that you may encounter certain bugs, but they should be fixed.

The benefits of installing this PureSlim-based ROM are plenty, and include extra features, higher performance and increased battery life.

    IMPORTANT – READ BEFORE PROCEEDING:

    • This guide works only for the Sony Xperia Ion. Attempting to apply this guide to any other device can result in phone bricking
    • In order to apply this guide, you need to have an unlocked bootloader and root access to the Xperia Ion. You also need the latest version of CWM or TWRP recovery
    • You will be required to factory reset your smartphone, so it's recommended that you create backups first
    • You can take advantage of applications such as "Helium", "SMS backup & restore" and "APN Settings Backup & Restore" in order to backup app data, text messages and APN Internet settings
    • You can easily backup your contacts by syncing them with your Google account
    • Below, you will find instructions on how to create a NANDROID backup of your ROM
    • You are required to connect your device to a computer, so enable USB Debugging before doing so. Go to "menu" > "Settings" > "Developer options" and mark the check box associated with "USB Debugging"
    • Make sure that your device's battery levels are at least at 70%. It's crucial that your smartphone doesn’t remain out of juice during the installation process
    • This is a guide for advanced users and includes unofficial operations. Read every step carefully, and proceed at your own risk!

    Rebooting in Recovery Mode:

IMPORTANT: don't follow this guide right now. This is a set of steps allowing you to reboot in CWM or TWRP recovery (depending on what you're already using), and you will refer to this guide later.

    1. Visit the Play Store on the Xperia Ion and download the "Quick Boot" app
    2. Launch the application on your device
    3. Tap "Recovery" and wait for the handset to reboot in CWM or TWRP

Sony Xperia Ion: Install Android 4.4 PureSlim Custom ROM (Unofficial) via CWM Recovery:

    1. Using your computer, visit this link to download the PureSlim ROM file
    2. Visit this link in order to download the Google apps package
    3. Connect your Xperia Ion to your PC via USB
    4. Copy the downloaded zip files onto your phone's SD storage, and disconnect your smartphone once the transfer is complete
    5. Reboot your device in CWM recovery (refer to the guide above)
    6. From the main CWM screen, select "backup & restore". Create a NANDROID backup of your current ROM
    7. After the backup, return to the main CWM screen and select "data wipeout / factory reset". You also need to access the "Advanced" menu and select "wipe cache" and "dalvik cache"
    8. Go back to the CWM screen and select "Install zip from SD card". Then, load the PureSlim ROM file
    9. From the CWM menu, select "Install zip from SD card" again, and load the Google apps zip file
    10. With both files flashed, select "+++Go Back+++" and then "Reboot system now"

NOTE: The first time you reboot your device, the process will take longer than usual. If the phone does not restart in 10 minutes, or if it's stuck in a boot loop, then you'll need to redo the guide from the beginning while making sure that you haven’t skipped any steps.

NOTE: The NANDROID backup can be used to return to your previous ROM. To do this, reboot in CWM recovery, select "backup & restore" and load the backup file

Sony Xperia Ion: Install Android 4.4 PureSlim Custom ROM (Unofficial) via TWRP Recovery:

    1. On your PC's Internet browser, visit this link and download the PureSlim file
    2. Grab the Android 4.4 Google apps package from this link
    3. Establish a connection between your smartphone and your computer using the USB cable
    4. Copy the files onto your Ion's SD storage
    5. After the files have been transferred, disconnect your device and reboot it in TWRP recovery. (Refer to the guide above)
    6. From the TWRP screen, create a NANDROID backup of your ROM. Select "Backup", mark the type of data that you want to store, and swipe the "Swipe to Backup" button
    7. Return to the main recovery menu and apply a full factory reset / wipe. You are also required to select "wipe cache" and "dalvik cache" from the "Advanced" menu. Confirm the operation by swiping the "Swipe to Wipe" button
    8. Go back to the TWRP menu, and tap "Install"
    9. Load the PureSlim ROM downloaded at step 1
    10. Tap "Install" again and flash the Google apps package as well
    11. With both files applied, return to the TWRP screen and then tap "Reboot"

NOTE: When you first reboot your smartphone after a fresh ROM installation, the process takes longer than usual. Be patient and don't press any buttons, but if the smartphone constantly restarts, or if it doesn't reboot in 10 minutes, then the ROM has not been applied successfully. Redo the guide while making sure you haven't skipped any steps

NOTE: should you choose to do so, you can load the NANDROID backup to return to your previous ROM. Simply reboot in TWRP recovery, tap "Restore" and load the appropriate file.

Will pressing the camera button on the bottom right of my phone effect the install? I did not make a copy of my previous ROM unfortunately. It's been around 5 mins and still black screen.
