    Hi

    I tried Cakewalk, but I found it too complicated.

    I couldn't find a view representing each track as 4 blocks per bar, which is the main view on Powertrax.

    Maybe I didn't give it a fair go. How do you copy bits of tracks and re-paste them elsewhere?

    That's not strictly true. Most computers come bundled with a soundcard - many of which are SoundBlasters' or one of their many clones.

    These cards invariably have a gameport and these nearly always double as a mdi in/out port as well - so, all you need is the right adaptor lead. Your local computer shop should be able to supply you with this lead - has a nine pin D plug on one end and two five pin DIN sockets ('midi' sockets) on the other.

    Fruity loops isn't free and it's more sample based than midi, although if you can step sequence with midi like you can the samples it should be pretty easy going.

    For real midi I'd suggest Logic audio or cubase
