Wondering what's the least expensive way to use my Sanyo scp-3810 cellphone while traveling for about a month in western Canada without building up charges that, last time, cost $1.50 per minute. Texting seems free but phone calls...ouch.
Is buying a local paid in advance phone cheaper?
any comments, suggestions appreciated for this newbie.

Re: Travel in Canada
Traveling to any country is always cheaper by buying a phone native to that country; however, sometimes the phone itself is more expensive than if you used your native CDMA USA phone. Some countries also prohibit the sale of a wireless phone number to a non-citizen, not sure if Canada does this. Please note that you will not be able to take your existing phone from US and activate it in Canada with a Canadian provider. You will have to buy a phone there.
How often do you travel to Canada? If yearly or so, you may want to reconsider your provider of choice. Sprint PCS, so far, seems highly to expensive in the country you are traveling to. I use Verizon Wireless and am able to take my standard wireless phone and use it in Canada for 69 cents per minute and 5 cents to receive, 50 to send text messages. That is just going on a basic plan. Verizon also has a North America plan that allows use in the USA and Canada for no additional fee (on top of monthly charges, which are slightly higher).

You may need to enter your zipcode first.

Re: Travel in Canada
Not sure what you mean by buying a service in Canada, I use my Sprint in Canada, just that it costs $1.50 per minute, and text seems to be free.

Re: Travel in Canada
The Verizon Wireless link I provided is a plan that includes service in Canada using a reliable service provider called Telus (probably the same you used with Sprint).
When I said buying service in Canada, I said that could be an option...but that not all countries allow non-citizens to do it.
Text messages are probably not free, most likely cheaper than talk though. It just may be that the provider in Canada has not yet provided Sprint with your text usage information. Sometimes it takes providers up to 3 months to report your usage to your home provider to charge you.
The website I sent you before is: Enter your location
It is the correct one. Let me copy a few quotes for you from the site above.
Perfect if you travel to Canada frequently. Now available with Friends & Family®. Unlimited calling to and from any 5 numbers on any network in America.Unlimited Long Distance to Canada & the U.S. (including Puerto Rico). No domestic roaming charges. (Coverage not available in all areas)
If you ever see a "chat here" button on the Verizon website, click it. They might be able to explain it better. I can tell you from personal experience on this plan that it includes calls from Canada, too...I have this plan and travel to Canada monthly and have never had any additional charges on top of my monthly plan fees.

Re: Travel in Canada
Appears that Sprint does have a Canada plan, for $2.59/mo they charge 20 cents a minutel. Guess I'll go with that. Not sure why my thread appears in 2 places??
