Ultra-Hot: Skype For S60 Finally Available!
By The Guru on April 24th, 2008
Wow, this is hotness. Right on the back of the Skype Unlimited plans recently announced, I’ve been alerted to a beta version of Skype for Nokia’s S60v3 handsets. You can snag the download at
Skype: download Skype for mobile, and it’s definitely a native version.
The application isn’t 100% ‘VoIP’, as it still requires a cellular connection to make a call. However, chat works over WiFi or cellular networks, as does receiving calls. When you go to initiate a call, the Skype application calls a local number, which then connects you to your contact, regardless of where they’re located.
It’s a rough start, but it’s a start, nonetheless. File transfer is not present, which was a bit disappointing, as well. Give it a go and let me know how it works for you!
I tried a few tests with Rafe Blandford of AllAboutSymbian, and found that I was able to easily call him from my PC, though it showed as a regular incoming local call to him (good news for those on limited plans). Unfortunately, we both encountered issues when attempting to initiate the call through the application to another person on the mobile client. Mobile to PC calls work fine.
Thanks to Gerrymoth at NokiaAddict.com for the tip.
