Sorry to sound like such a noob, but I was wondering how reputable the unlocked phones on eBay are. Obviously you have to be careful not to buy from just anyone, but, for the most part, if I bid on an unlocked phone from a reputable buyer there, and slipped my current T-Mobile SIM card into it when I got it, would it work or do I have anything further to do?
Thanks everyone.

It would work, however you would need to call customer care to get your phone configured for T-MobileWeb/T-Zone, sms, and mms messaging.

Thanks for responding. It is for a Treo actually, GSM Treo. I may use the web at a later date but really I want it for phone use, storing various programs onto the expansion card and for daily address book, palm pilot use. I can still just slip the SIM in and use right away but at a later date can call up if I choose to use the web or tzones correct?

Hmmm, I'm not too sure. T-Zones and the web are similar, yet they are two different things. The Treo is a data device and it uses T-Mobile Internet, which is the real internet. T-Zones/T-MobileWeb is what you would get on a regular handset, say, the Motorola Razr.
The Motorola Razr would let you access wap sites.
The Treo would let you get actual websites.
Data devices aren't exactly my strong point, so I'm hoping someone else here may know.
You can, however, slip in a TMO sim card and use the treo to make a phone call (if the treo is in fact unlocked). All of the other funtions of the treo would also remain intact. Again, sms and mms messaging would need to be configured to TMO's settings.
