Ok, it connects to the wireless network at my place no problem, automatically.

But when I come to my parents it wont connect at all?
    it says:

"unable to obtain a server-assigned IP address. Try again later or enter an IP address in Network settings."

SO i checked the IP on my parents laptop (also wireless internet)
and looked at thats IP hoping I could coppy that into my MDA (really showing my networking ignorance here...) but when I went to network settings it wouldnt allow me to type anything in...it had a blank IP of like 00.000.000

What do i need to do to get it to connect?

Like I said it connects to mine at home with no trouble.
I have yet to get any data package yet, but I heard it would work on Wifi anyway. Any help?

    Thanks.

Please specify your wireless network setting as well as your parent wireless setting i.e What sort of encryption etc.

If you were to copy the same setting on your parent laptop, it will cause an IP conflict.

You will need to connect to your router via a web browser normally the router IP address is set to 192.168.1.1

Once you are connected you can check to see the current setting, if your parent wireless router is locked up you will need to use a valid key to connect to the network.

Shouldn't this post be in the Computer networking section in the forum?

When you purchase your router at home did you make some changes on the router?

If your answer a was a no, If I was you I would open up my router documentation up and go through how to secured up your wireless connection, other wise any of your neighbour would be able to use your connection.

It is really important that you set it up so that you can only use it, otherwise you will be responsible if someone uses it and do something illegal using your internet connection.

I have no idea what they did with their router. I doubt they do either.

For what its worth. its cable internet through a linksys wireless G (i think?) router.

I think my MDA would tell me if the network was secured or unsecured?

Re: Having trouble connecting to wireless network MDA

Next time you are over their place why don't you have a look. If the router is a linksys WRT54G model. Just connect to the router, from there if its been encrypted see if you can actual extract the pass key from the router and put on your MDA.

I have posted a link which has a third parties firmware which is better then the original that linksys provide.

On the main forum page of cellphone forum, you should find a topic on computer. Click on the computer topic, There should be a threard about Networking01 I think click on that thread.

There should be a link that I have recently posted on that thread where you can download that firmware, if and only if that is your router model.

P.S Make sure the driver on your Wifi card on the MDA phone supports the encryption method. i.e. WPA, WPA2 or WEP.
