Can you buy a smartphone on Ebay and use it without a data plan

I'm going to college and where I will be i will pretty much have a Wi-Fi network everywhere I go that is considerably faster then any 3G connection, so I really don't want a data plan. The only time I might not have a Wi-Fi hotspot everywhere is when I drive off campus but that pretty much means I shouldn't be on my phone anyways, and I have a GPS for navigation as well. I also can't afford a $30 a month data plan.

I would however like to grab an Android Smartphone (Unlocked) on Ebay and use it on campus without using the data plan.

Can I just sign up for a T-Mobile plan, plug in my sim card (I have T-mobile pre-paid right now) and just have that without the data plan?

Actually, I was wondering the same thing. I was thinking about doing that, cuz there are some smart phones that I would like to have, but I don't want the data plan. I'm also gonna be in T-mobile. Is there anyone knows if you have use a smartphone w/o the data plan?

I had a Blackberry unlocked and it worked perfectly with my sim card without data.

i agree with solid, u can use it, with no data.. but honestly why would you.. isnt that the whole point of a smart phone?

Several times I had to use eBay and once I had to buy a smartphone on this marketplace. I would be lying if I didn't say that it was a real torture for me. My payment was processed for a whole week and in the end it was rejected. But in the end, justice prevailed, because I contacted eBay customer service where I was quickly able to solve the problem and even received a refund.
