i work for a bus company and i find cell phones all the time and they never get claimed. Now my phone broke and I was wondering if I can put my SIM card into one i found and use it. Is that even legal? Can i get in trouble?

If your company has a policy where the phone must be placed in lost and found and is not claimed within the proper time, usually you can legally own the phone.
If its a high end phone like a blackberry they might be able to track the mac address but i am not sure. Low end phones like ones that aren't android or blackberry should not have any tracking devices.
In any case if no one claimed it then you shouldn't have any problem using the phone.
You must use the sim card in a proper phone though, if the phone is not made for T-Mobile you may have to unlock it, but if its already a TMO phone or UNLOCKED you simply pop in the sim card and boot it up; make sure to do a factory reset and update the firmware to get it running fresh again.
