Is there anything preventing you from using T-mobile to pay your Sprint ETF and then canceling T-mobile and then switching to AT&T? The new T-mobile doesn't have any contracts so you wouldn't have to pay anything back to them, right?

You can do this if you want to pay for the phone that you have to buy through T-mobile in full. This is because with this offer T-mobile doesn't give you a subsidized phone at a discount, you either have to pay the full price for a phone, or finance it. If you finance it, you have to pay for the rest if you cancel with T-mobile.

The solution - get a cheap phone from T-mobile when you switch, then sell it later. In this case it would be wise to not get an expensive phone assuming you'd get a subsidized one through AT&T anyway. This way you don't have to worry about getting it unlocked and it working on AT&T's LTE, etc.

Also, I just read it may take T-mobile 8 weeks to send you the amount for the ETF via mastercard. So I wouldn't count on switching right away.

Unless you have awful reception, I don't know why you'd even want to switch from T-mo. I switched to the Uncarrier this past summer, and barring a genuine switch in philosophy by AT&T, Verizon or Sprint, T-mo is where I am going to be.
