Hi,
I'm about to purchase a smart phone such as the UT Starcom 6700 and was wondering if this can be activated from mytelus with just a voice plan.
All I want to do is transfer my existing voice plan onto the 6700.
I've heard of many people doing this but can it be done now or have they changed this?

Re: Smartphone activation with only voice plan
Telus currently only allows you to have a smart phone with a data plan. I find this quite stuped althoug Rules are Rules.

Really ? No PDA with voice only ?
Bell Mobility allows voice only on PDA devices.

Re: Smartphone activation with only voice plan
I'm afraid Telus is strict on having a data plan with a data device. However, there are some old handsets that are able to be activated without one, such as the Samsung i700. However, all current Telus models have to have one.

Re: Smartphone activation with only voice plan
This rule is just nuts.. I just lost my sph-a540 with 6 months left on my contract. I want to get a pda phone for contact and calendar sync with outlook. I don't want email on my phone so I have no need for any data.. I like telus and their plans but feel forced to switch to another provider that will do a voice only plan for me..
I'm a happy 4 year client who is going to be a new rogers/bell client...
frustrating...

Re: Smartphone activation with only voice plan
A pay-per-use data package is now available at Telus for $0/month (and any data used is rated at $30/MB -- with the first 250KB free). Great if you plan to use virtually no data at all.

Re: Smartphone activation with only voice plan
I've been with Telus for over 5 years now and I'm looking at smartphones to eventually replace my current phone. Reading this, I'm not quite sure I want to go with Telus for a smartphone...
Any opinion on which canadian carrier has the best plans / flexible rules?

Re: Smartphone activation with only voice plan
if you have a good friend that is a telus rep for cell phones there is a data plan that costs nothing. it is called email & pda 60(dealer). as i am i rep i found it and use it for my 6700. i took the 60.00 data regular plan for a month and then i switched over to the dealer one, now i get the same data plan at no cost.

Re: Smartphone activation with only voice plan
You must be a new rep as Telus has many Email and Web plans and they are for anyone not just the dealer. You can also get a PDA with no data plan. Its called pay per use- you don't use you don't pay.
