check ebay for unlock tri-band (900mhz, 1800mhz, 1900mhz) or quad band (850mhz, 900mhz, 1800mhz, 1900mhz) gsm phone and make sure the phone is unlock or check samstores.com all the phone they sell there is unlock.
once your in india, just by the prepaid sim card from india service provider. (aircell, bharat sanchar, bharti airtel, BPL mobile, dishnet wireless, escorts tele., IDEA cellular, mahanagar, reliace, vadafone) put that sim to your unlock cellphone and your ready to go. in this way your not using the expensive roaming charges from telus.

    Re: Unlocking telus phone

The local SIM card suggestion is probably the best way to go given the description of what you are trying to do. I would suggest that you purchase the Telus SIM card (they are inexpensive and have no recurring costs) and put it in your unlocked phone for initial use. If I recall you have to order it though, so don't leave getting it to the last minute before your trip.

This will give you some service (albeit fairly expensive) as soon as you hit the ground; then switch to the local SIM as soon as you are able. I have done this quite often and it can be very helpful when you hit the airport or if you have stopovers along the way where you don't want to have to buy another SIM just for a quick call from the airport.

    I hope this helps.
