I just got a phone call from someone clearly not from Canada, stating he was from Telus and that my number was randomly chosen and i have won an LG Chocolate Flip phone. The promotion i get with this phone is as follows:

    3 months free:
    - Unlimited calling
    - " " video
    - " " texting
    - " " picture

    - 825 minutes free
    - Unlimited evening/weekend
    - " " incoming
    - " " calling
    - " " voice mail
    - " " texts

He said the phone was under a 3 yr. contract with a $35.00 activation fee.

I'm incredible dense when it come to talking about cell phone issues and what not, but i just thought i'd ask you guys to see if this is real or an actual scam???????? has anyone else had this happen to them???

    Hi,

I was wondering if anything came out of this for you? I just got the same call. I questioned him several times, but still ended up giving my birthdate and postal code (stupid, I know).

Just wondering what I should be worried about!

    hey,

actually, what happened was i kept getting calls from "so and so" from the Calgary office calling be back as a confirmation call. i got the "confirmation call" twice and the second time they called, i flipped out on them and told them to delete my number or legal action will be enforced. They did so, thusly and i have yet to receive a call from them.

...it's a scam... be careful! next time they call, tell them you want everything deleted and don't want the phone. Why would they give you a free phone from telus when you already have one FROM telus right? stupid scams!

If you want to know if the call came from Telus the best thing to do is call Telus and ask. I seriously doubt that it was Telus who called you. Probably an unscrupulous cell phone dealer trying to sell you a phone at regular price.

Lots of cell phones are free on a 3 year plan. You didn't win anything - what you have described is just the regular price of a chocolate phone that someone was trying to get you to buy. You may get the phone for free, but after you pay the activation fee, you also have to pay the monthly bill on the cell phone plan, which is usually a minimum of $35-45. After 3 years the phone is considered to be paid for. If you don't pay the bill they deactivate the phone and bill you $500. You cannot use the phone through any other carrier and Telus will not reactivate it unless you pay them. So then you have a completely useless phone, until you pay up.

Do not enter into a 3 year plan unless you really want the phone and plan to keep it for a long time, and make sure you get the phone you want, don't just settle for whatever because it is cheap or free. And most importantly, you should be the one to contact the cell phone company, not the other way around. Look into a couple of different companies and find the one that has the best deal. If you want a Telus phone, then go into a Telus store or visit their website to get it. Never buy something from someone who calls you out of the blue.

Regarding the activation fee: Virgin was the only company I found that does not charge an activation fee, and their plans are pretty inexpensive too. Telus is a good price too and they have better customer service than Virgin or Rogers. Rogers sucks and is expensive and I do not reccomend them.
