I recently had a discussion with telus support and they said they checked with a [email protected] as to whether or not imap.telus.net supports imap4. Scanning port 143 returns "imap2" not "imap4" which may explain why IMAP Idle (push email) does not work for my telus.net account (particularly on my mobile phone, the HTC Desire).

It works for our corp email hosted through telushosting.com but not for my personal email at telus.net.

Shouldn't telus be running IMAP4 so our smartphones don't need to poll every x minutes?

See More: Telus only supports IMAP2 and not IMAP4?

Re: Telus only supports IMAP2 and not IMAP4?

    Here is an update:

Here is my scenario. I have two email accounts. One with telus.net and one through telushosting (business email). I access both from my PC (running Thunderbird) and my HTC Desire mobile phone (which does support IMAP Idle via K-9 email, ģen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Push_e-mail, "K-9 Mail[3] is a freeware and open source e-mail client for Android which supports IMAP IDLE."). IMAP Idle acts like push (ģen.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMAP_IDLE). Thunderbird also supports IMAP Idle. IMAP Idle is wonderful.

On both my HTC and my PC my telushosting.com email account does not require a "Check every X minutes" setting. Emails come in within seconds of being sent (I tested this several times and it works both ways, into the HTC and into the PC, I use it everyday). I explicitly turned off the "Check Every..." setting on my telushosting account because I know IMAP Idle works on their email servers. But for my telus.net email account I am forced to use "Check every..." otherwise I will never receive an email (unless I force a check).

IMAP is powerful in that I can have both my Inbox and my Sent-Mail boxes in sync regardless of where I am. I don't use POP anymore for this reason. And there is no need to use a gmail account to do this. Again, works like a charm through telushosting's email service but not through telus.net.

So I guess my question is: Does imap.telus.net support IMAP idle? How can I make an absolute determination of this and if not, how can I get Telus to change it?

And here is what their tech support says:

    This from Telus Chat Support:

10:48:10 PM You How can I definitively determine if imap.telus.net email servers support IMAP Idle which is on IMAP4? I know telushosting supports it.
10:49:25 PM AJ We have basic IMAP right now.
10:49:40 PM AJ IMAP Idle is something that is not integrated into our servers at the moment.
10:50:26 PM You That is unfortunate because it acts as Push Email if the client supports it. Very useful on mobile devices.

So it appears Telus.net does NOT support IMAP IDLE. I'm not sure why but I am wanting to learn. If anyone knows a reason let me know. Tks!
