What to do with cell phone with bad ESN

I just bought a phone with a bad ESN, it was very dumb of me but now I don't know what to do with the phone, can I sell it or see if I can use it? I don't know what to do, please HELP!!!

By bad do you mean lost or stolen

When I called the phone company they told me the phone was "restricted" and they wouldn't tell me anything else except that I couldn't activate it.
