Why Orange feel the need to start charging for calls to freephone numbers I
don't know. It was a big plus point that they were free but now they're just
the same/worse than the other networks.

    Thank you most interesting.

Yea, but most (?) of the 'tubbies' won't know as much as you've told us. :-)

I though it was even law that Orange, classes as a PCS network, had to
    provide free 0800 numbers?
Suppose big business can easily lobby to change the law when they can make
money from the change . .

Still it removes one of the great advantages of Orange, and is a reason I
    now have an o2 contract.

If that was the case, then how did One2One get away with it several years
ago? They were a PCN network as well?

How will someone know if they are dialing such a number ? Will they get a
"this 0800 number really is free" message, or will the just get a lack of
    a "this 0800 number isn't free" message ?

Who remembers the time when Orange were "different" ? Now, they're just
    like any other telephone company.

Any ideas if they'll start charging for 0800 numbers on the High Speed
Data Plan as well? If so goodbye Orange!

As many others have said, the things that made Orange 'great' are
    gradually being removed.

Gradually being removed? - is there anything left. I joined them 2
months after launch. If it wasn't for OVP-Virgin the account would be
    well closed.

Which is one of the reasons I'm leaving after 9 years. Come back Hans

Sorry - forgot the HSD plan. This is treated as an old Talk15 plan, so yes,
the 0800 charges will also apply......

Although I cannot comment on Orange's decision to charge for these numbers,
I feel that a lot of people won't be happy about it.

Yes there are a few. Free delivery of messages into other peoples
voice mailboxes is one and the ability to PAC a phone number into an
orange account at any time being another.

There's a few others of lesser importance.

That particular requirement of their GSM licence was rescinded by the
DTi a number of years ago.
