Sorry, I thought we were talking about PAYG. I suppose in many ways I
should have read the subject line more thoroughly!

When registering an upgrade the IMEI is not asked for, as when you read
the SIM number out the system then fills in the IMEI.

Been over three weeks since recieved one of the phones - not registered the
SIM and the old one hasn't been de-activated yet.

Fills in the IMEI info from where?

The interesting thing would be if you tried the *NEW* SIM in the phone. It
will possibly trigger its activation if Orange have given up waiting for
a phone call and have just set this up!

I wonder why they do this. Is it so they can customise the features to
    the phone.
I told 'em a completely different phone type to what it actually ended
up in, and it appears to have made no differerence.

    New SIM is still inactive.

I sold the phone, chucked the SIM and am still using the old SIM in the old
    phone. No problems here.

A friend of mine lost his Orange phone around the same time that I got
my OVP Virgin upgrade (along with a new Sim card). He reported it lost
and the handset was barred. Orange told him that a replacement Sim
would cost him £15 + VAT.

So I gave sold my new phone and Sim. He rang Orange and said that he'd
received a replacement Sim card and asked them to register it to his
account. They presumably assumed that he'd bought a legitimate
replacement and they didn't ask any further questions! Now his account
is up and running again and my old Sim card is still working in my
    phone.

Which backs up my assertion that OCS don't have a record of who was
sent what sim or the reason why it was sent.
I'm keeping my extra new sim just for this purpose.

Also backing up your assertion (and damaging the claims of those who say
that SIMs will self-register) is that Orange need the SIM number read
out to them on the phone (and not just the upgrade number).

Mind you I *WANTED* mine registered as the old one was from 1999 and the new
one had double the phone number storage.

    Re: OVP Virgin Upgrade Questions

    Postscript to this theme.
Just got my bill for the last month.
I have 3x OVP numbers on one account.
I got 1 free phone for each of two of the numbers, and
TWO free phones for the 3rd number. i.e. 4 phones in total.
Bill shows Service Charges for 0.00 for all of the upgrades.
One number has 2 lines showing the nil charge for 2 different upgrades
    on consecutive days.
So you don't get charged for the upgrades or for any duplicate upgrades
you managed to slip passed their wacky processes.
