Hi,
I hope you understand what I'm trying to ask in the following
questions...
I've taken delivery of a free upgrade phone k300i at zero cost. I got
this on my account but intend to give the phone to the girlfriend as a
Christmas present. Does anyone see any problems with this? Will the
phone need to be registered with orange and used on my account?
Also in the box was a SIM card, will this SIM be a replacement SIM to
my existing SIM? Do I need to use it or can I just forget about it?
I did just take the SIM from my existing phone and put it in the new
k300i, and made a quick call to confirm it worked and it did?
Would my best course of action be to call orange and register the new
phone and new SIM and then put the new SIM in my old handset and then
give the new handset to the girlfriend?
Many thanks.
Tim.

The only problem will be if your girlfriend finds out you got her
present for free

No. The phone will work with *any* Orange SIM (and/or probably with a SIM
from another network if you get it unlocked)

It's probably best to register it. Your old SIM will then be disabled - but
at least one person here asserts that this will happen after a while even if
you *don't* register the new one.

Yes, it will - until you register the new one.

Yes, that's fine - but at least get her a (possibly free*) PAYG SIM to go
with it.
* Orange were offering free PAYG SIMs a week or two ago - not sure whether
they are still or not, but you can get one on-line for 3 or 4 quid if not.

No - It has been claimed that, if this new SIM is not activated in a
reasonable period, (a week or so) the Orange will activate it automatically
(at which point the old one stops working).

I would say so. They only wanted the details of the SIM when I called
(and not the upgrade handset).

I know that whoever claimed this to be the case (I think it was Jon) is
usually reliable with his info, but I've had upgrade phones from Orange
where I've never activated the new sims ever (for years). I think the only
consequence of this is that the "official" phone on your account remains at
whatever it was originally - which may be a problem if you have Care.

The way they do the SIM upgrade may explain this! When I registered the new
SIM I was told to wait for two hours (while still using the old one) and then
change the SIMs over. At the very first sight of the new SIM the system
switched the number to it (and deregistered the old SIM). I guess that if
the system *NEVER* ever sees the new SIM it won't switch over!

Re: OVP Virgin Upgrade Questions
Guys,
Thanks for your replys, can I summarise that the best course of action
is as follows?
Put the new SIM in the new handset and then phone orange to register
the two together. Then take the new SIM out and put it into my existing
handset. Then give the girlfried the new handset in which she puts her
old SIM and all will be fine???
Thanks again,
Tim.

Re: OVP Virgin Upgrade Questions
Or having just read Biran's last comment, do not touch the new SIM and
continue to use my old SIM in my handset and let the grilfriend put her
old SIM in the new handset?
Thanks,
Tim.

As long as she's got an Orange SIM, that's fine. As someone else has pointed
out, if you subscribe to Orange Care, you might have fun defining which
handset is covered by which number!
Incidentally, what's the point of Orange Care? You can insure a phone on the
all risks part of your household insurance policy for a *fraction* of the
price.

Although remember household insurances typically have at least a £50
excess, require forced entry for theft claims (no chance of claiming it
was 'lost'), will not cover the cost of replacing the SIM, or calls made
on stolen phone (no idea if Care covers these last two). Ensure
accidental damage is included too.
And possibly more importantly - any claim you make on that policy, will
affect your no-claims discount, increase your premium, and need to be
disclosed should you want to switch to another insurer. Mobile
insurance seems to be sold withot any of those issues (no claims
discounts + previous claim declarations).
Still, I agree - you'll probably find it's already covered by your
home's insurance, and for a high value phone, it might just be worth
claiming should something happen to it.

I was talking about the "All risks" bit of the policy which covers items
which you carry round with you - so you don't have to have your house broken
into to be able to claim. That includes loss and accidental damage (but not
malfunction unless associated with an insurable event).
My policy has an excess for unspecified items - but not for specified items.
So, by specifying the phones, I can insure them at a value of £100 each for
a premium of £1.50 each compared with Orange's £60. No contest!

Re: OVP Virgin Upgrade Questions
Related to all this discussion (except the insurance bit), do Orange
want to know the IMEI of the phone when you register a new PAYG SIM? If
so, will they be bothered that the phone is on a contract (albeit one
with no line rental)? This used to be an issue IIRC.

Yes and no.

Re: OVP Virgin Upgrade Questions
No, when you registering the new SIM they do NOT ask for the IMEI, but
sometimes they ask which model phone is it.
