A friends daughter is going on a 'gap year', (but probably for 6 months!) to
Tanzania, Zanzibar, Swaziland, Mozambique, Botswana, S.Africa and Zambia.

She currently has an O2 contract which is nearing it's end.

I suspect like most teenagers, she'll be mainly be using text, with the
    occasional voice call

Her plan was to change to O2 payg, but leave that at home and take an old
Nk3210 and buy a 'local' sim in whichever country she's in for the longest.

I've suggested that she takes her O2 payg with her (to receive texts) and
also gets a riing sim (to send texts and to make voice calls)

    What says the group?

She can get a local sims for each place when she there or some places may do
them here. I have a The Gambia dont know if thats any use. Local would work
out cheaper if you going to be spending some time in each place. You could
try ebay to see if theres any beong sold on there.

There is a company that I know of www.telestial.com that will do this. I
found them when I was looking for an Irish SIM, which would have cost me $39
plus $7 shipping. It was however, cheaper for me to buy direct from O2
Ireland, but you may not have that option with your countries.

So that she can still receive calls on her O2 contract SIM, she should set
up an account with www.uk2abroad.co.uk. She should then buy PAYG sims from
www.telestial.com. As you say she should also take the PAYG O2 sim to
receive incoming texts. www.telestial.com only offer (from the above
destinations) South Africa & Tanzania. For other destinations she should use
her O2 contract SIM with www.uk2abroad.co.uk - cheaper & more effective than
    Global SIM's.

Port the number over to a Virgin mobile SIM and setup a direct debit.
That will ensure she keeps her number with no line rental and also
allow her to use roaming at one of the (comparatively) lowest rates
(Virgin charge a lot less for roaming to their post-pay direct debit
customers). Ensure she's not persuaded to add any useless Virgin
    "bundles" to this.

Once out of the UK get her to seek out a local prepay SIM in each
country, which are widely available across africa, and get her to
leave her current foreign mobile number on her UK voicemail message so
people know how to call her. That will avoid her paying any incoming
call charges and ironically it can be cheaper to call a mobile in
Africa from the UK than another UK mobile!

I can only comment on South Africa from that list where MTN and
Vodacom SIMs are cheap and plentifully (there's also a third network
which is cheaper but has limited coverage). Even Zimbabwe has 3 mobile
networks and GSM coverage across the continent is common if you stick
to the main routes or cites.

It may be better for her to wait till she's there (since she's
visiting a few countrys during the trip) as the SIMs have a habbit of
expiring if they're not used for a few months. It'll only cost her
    around £ 12 once there.

Interestingly and completely changing the subject, Vodacom are now
doing 1 GB of 3G data in South Africa for R 499 pm. That's less than
£ 50 pm and the 3g coverage in Jo'burg seems better than my part of
    London!

But there are seven places on the list (I'm crap at Geography, so excuse me
    if I'm wrong) so isn't that 7 x 12 = 84?

You would need to weigh the cost of any calls made against the cost of a
local SIM. If the cost of calls using her UK SIM is going to be less than
the cost of a local SIM plus airtime, then it isn't worth it.

Aha! So that'll only work in two of the countries she wants to go to, and I
don't suppose she wants to buy seven different sims, so which UK network has
the least expensive roaming rates in these areas? (mainly for texting)

The question is if they do. Go here
    http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/index.shtml, check which networks
are in which countries and try and figure out which ones have SIM cards
available. Publicly available are only Tanzania & South Africa, as well as
services such as Riing and other roaming services. Also check out
www.uk2abroad.co.uk which may be a cheaper option. If you need any help,
    e-mail me off group.
