Best SIM card to use in US

I'm planning to go to the US. Can anyone advise the best US SIM card
to buy, in terms of cost of calls to US and UK?

Depends where you'll be. GSM coverage is still very patchy, particularly
outside major cities and interstate routes. I use T-Mobile To Go for local
calls, with a calling card to call back to UK. Don't forget you pay for
incoming calls in the US.

What Calling Card, and how does it work? Actually I lied, it's my son
who is going to the US. Is the CC hard to set up and use?

It's a World Telecom one I've had for years, it's just an 800 number to
call from any phone in the US. There's an 0800 number for the UK also,
plus accesss numbers from most countries. It's probably not the cheapest
card to use, but it doesn't get a lot of use and there are no ongoing
charges.

Who supplies the airtime for their "Mobile UK" SIM cards..? The rates to
the US aren't bad.

He can get a calling card at any drugstore - Duane Reed have a good range -
and they work like the calling cards that you see in newsagents here: you
buy the card with a certain amount of credit on it, to use it you call a
1-800 freephone number, key in your account number and PIN (under a
scratch-off strip) and then dial your destination. Cellphone companies don't
bar the access numbers, but do charge standard local call rates. The
international part of the call is deducted from the credit on the calling
card - it's only a few cents per minute to UK landlines, but quality can be
bad on the cheaper cards.

For the SIM card, I found AT&T (now part of Cingular) to have a much larger
GSM network than T Mobile, and cheaper calls. Don't bother with Verizon,
they don't use GSM. Lastly, make sure his phone is unlocked before he goes!

You're absolutely right, I'd forgotten to say that many areas are now
covered by 850MHz GSM only, which is the 'fourth' band supported by a quad
band phone. In practice, I found that a tri-band phone like the Nokia 6310i
(which supports 1900MHz only) worked fine in the big cities and along the
East coast. From memory, the 850MHz transmitters are in the newer coverage
areas in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest.

There now seems to be a fair amount of 850 in the NY/NJ area.
