While we're on the subject, anybody know if you can buy an Orange USIM
outright or upgrade an existing SIM to a USIM?

You can buy a PAYG USIM instore for £5. You cannot upgrade your number to a
USIM unless you buy a new 3G handset as well.

Thank you. Do Orange supply new non-3G phones with a USIM these days?
The reason I ask is that I recently upgraded to an SPV c550 on my OVP Virgin
account, and got a new SIM card - which I'd like to use in a 3G phone.

But, presumably, you can manually put any existing number onto this USIM by
porting out (to Virgin say) and then back again?

No, the SIMs are allocated depending on the handset type - so you'll only
get a USIM in a 3G handset's box. Your SIM will work in the 3G phone, you
just won't get the 3G features.

You can if you find the right customer service assistant. I got one a few
weeks back and was told at the Orange store that it wasn't possible so they
activated the USIM with a new number. After phoning customer services for
the third time i found an assitant that was willing to switch my old number
over to the new USIM. You will lose the credit on your old SIM though.
